looking for a good casual .40-63 bullet style

I have a pacific that was 40-63 and a PO rechambered to 40-82. It is a gray gun with VG rifling so I just want a bullet to play with tat is suited for the gun. I have the 400 gr .410 Lyman mold but I don't necessarily need to push something that hard. I would be interested in a good source of cast bullets for it since my intent is plinking.

Thank you,
Charles

Charles,  I'll be interested in what answers you get.   Right now I'm considering asking Tom at Accurate Molds to modify cateloge number 42-345c.  The chamber in my 40-63 is too tight for a groove size bullet so have yet to see what drop size I should order.   Gonna take a stab at inside neck reeming first.   If you google 'Accurate Molds' and go to 'catalogue' you can have a look at current options you'd like to pick from or one you can modify.    If you are looking for store bought I'm not so sure about a source.   I'm looking to cast one between 330 and 370gr myself.   John

Best Regards,
John

I forgot to mention that I have a Winchester mold in excellent condition marked 40-65 which looks like about a 260 gr but I have not cast anything from it yet. And, the twist rate looks relatively quick so a larger should work. I also should mention that the target distance will be 200 yards not much further.

Thanks,
Charles

Find the Saeco 640, which casts at 369gr in 20-1 for my 40-65, to be an excellent load out to 300yd. It has shot 99-1X at 200yd & 95-4x at 300yd and knocked over 30/40 in our 200m all off-hand silhouette match yesterday. Next time out will give it a try with 45gr of Goex 2F with some Cream-0-Wheat on top to fill the case for the chickens at 50m and pigs at 100m. No reason to waste the powder or my shoulder if the lighter loads will knock over with no loss of accuracy.  BTW - have found Saeco molds to cast as well as PJ, Brooks or BACo molds at twice the price, or more.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Probably need to slug the bore to see what diameter bullet you need. But Montana Precision Swaging sells a nice looking 400 gr. .408" bullet, if you're looking to buy cast bullets, vs. casting them. Midway USA has them for $31 per 50.

I agree with Marlinguy, slug the bore first as they often varied. For my .40-63 Ballard Pacific I ended up casting the Lyman 412263 and then sizing it down to .410.

I used Lyman 412263 in my 40-63 Ballard and it shot very well. I think it weighs about 300 grains. My thoughts were that I did not need a lot of bullet weight to go 200 yards and get through a piece of paper and that proved correct. I breech seated so I don't know if it needs sized to fit in a case or not. I did not size mine.

Marlin was pretty much standard at .410 on all their .40 caliber cartridges. I have observed this for the last 45 years. But be aware there are different thicknesses in case mouth. 40-63 was the last of this series and had the thicker mouth. 40-70 used a thinner case mouth and lighter brass. same with the 40-85 and 40-90. Things were evolving back then and the "everlasting case" was becoming the standard. Today we would call all out modern cases everlasting. I have use 210 to 370 with good results. If you want a really cheep plinker use the lead bullet for the .41 mag. Its light and the correct diameter but only a plinker
