In a  solvent cleaned and brushed barrel of proven capability, it will usually take no more than 4-5 shots to begin a target with desirable shot to shot performance.

Any ideas about Federal consistently  shooting better with an uncleaned barrel?  I have known several shooters who report this result.

Why would anybody shoot at -40?

Northern Canadians are adapted to their environment.

We enjoy shooting winter or summer and we go camping at -40 and ice fishing as well.

That explains why you guys are all sweating at Spokane in the spring.  I thought you were worried about American shooters, but it is the heat; too hot without snow on the ground  Roll Eyes .  Guess I should have known better since you bring wringers: Gregg and Colleen.  Cheesy

Besides the bears are hibernating and it is much nicer when the mosquitos are not out.

Amen to that. And besides anything over 70F is just too hot.

On the bullet temp conversation

I'm just not certain it has everything to do with the lube. The reason I say this is because I shoot RWS R50 cartridges in an Anschutz and I shoot RWS R50 bullets out of a high power air rifle.

In the winter I see no difference in the velocity of the air rifle. Bullets and barrel being the same the variable is propellant. But I do see a big difference in the cartridges performance.

I use a handy calculator that includes a powder temperature function. I've noticed that velocity change in the warmer end of ambient temps is minimal but the calculator shows big differences once the powder temp gets into the 30's. This has been more or less verified by shots over the chrony.

Consider your sitting at the bench with a box of 35deg cartridges. The barrel is 65deg. If there is any difference in lag time after the cartridge is inserted in the breach its going to absorb a variable amount of heat and the powder is going to be at a different temp. If you happen to crack the shot off in a few seconds the cartridge could still be in the 30's where the app shows big differences per degree in velocity. Next shot you fiddle with an adjustment or wait for condition and the cartridge warms up to 60 deg.

Just a thought

I used to shoot in Canadian winter Anschutz 54's & BSA Internationals with subsonic target ammo @ 200 M ,  most noticeable thing was the bullet drop on cold days. when sighted in at 40 Deg , and next week shooting at 10 Deg bullet impact would drop about 2 Feet. Most of the guys used higher vel in winter , but I stayed subsonic and they were wimpy , of the target ammo most lots of Eley were generally too weak to use , it dropped the most

since you bring wringers: Gregg and Colleen.

Those RKS Family barrels come in handy.

Too bad we can only bring less than half of the Smith Clan to the Stars & Stripes Range at Nine Mile Falls.

Don't worry Bob; Colleen never practices (and we have never seen her sweat).

Bill Crane used to keep his .22 ammo in his pocket during cold weather. Said warm ammo always works better.

Sorry, nobody I know shoots Federal except occasional boxes of old stuff when they made superior match ammo. Probably 95% shoot ELEY, a little Lapua, and a bit of RWS.

I'm still shooting the old Federal UM. One or two shots on the sighter and on to a record target.

If the wind is up or some other bad condition like temperature, I shoot other ammo.
