Muzzle Loading Schuetzen Rifles...

Greetings,
I am brand new to this forum and I see lots of my BPCR brethren here but does anyone know a lot about the Muzzle Loading Schuetzen's ?? I have German, Italian and Swiss versions that beg to be shot but I know they don't shoot round ball accurately.. What is the best bullet design to use in a .40 cal gun.. I have Maxiball molds for the .45 and .50 version but is there a .40 cal "best choice"??
I was told that Swiss #2 is the best powder..

Thanks in advance Smiley

A hearty welcome to you, Bill. There are a few of us who are interested in the percussion Schuetzen rifles. Very few of us unfortunately.

I have a meager collection, several of which are .40 caliber. I shoot round balls and picket bullets and short hollow based bullets. Have found that the round ball out to one hundred yards works as good as anything else.

carefully measure the twist. they were transition-period arms as bullet technology was changing.  some have slow twist for patched round balls and some with faster twist for bullet of various types.   I had an original in 45 cal and now have a repro in the same    I managed to find one of those long discontinued Lee modern-minis bullet loads----basically a flat nosed DEEPLY hollow-based wadcutter and they gave really good accuracy in both rifles.

Bill - log onto the Muzzle Loaders Assoc of Great Britain forum.  Look around there for loading info and bullets used.  They shoot matches out to 1200 meters with ML and the gents are very good at it so you should find excellent information... And follow the advice of Maynard8130

Swiss makes excellent powder and so does KIK and the new Goex's Olde Eynsford.  Swiss and KIK use Alder Buckthorn for their charcoal which is the best wood for black powder. What your looking for in BP is moist fouling and velocity.  Hint - Alder Buckthron charcoal, the 'Engine of BP' generates much higher velocities for original gunpowder.  I've shot cases of Swiss but my favorites now are the March 2009 lot of KIK and the new Olde Eynsford
All are available at Powder Inc owned by Jerry Dean in Clarksville, AR ... (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Also, here's loading data for RB's and conicals ...

No, this loading data is not solely for Goex powder.  It was developed by Curtis's & Harvey's in Ardeer, Scotland - recognized to be the best black powder made.  Unfortunately, C&H is no longer in business
Good Luck and Shoot Straight
