Lady Luck smiled Today

I had a table at the local gunshow for the first time in decades. First thing I saw was next to me a guy was asking about the value of his 2" unertl, so I tracked him to his table and in the end I paid excessively ($800) for a like new 15X. Well I turn around to leave and under the shelf on another table was a black Ideal powder measure which I picked up and thought "wow" for only $55 so I asked the guy if he would take $50 and he jumped at it (as did I). My question is: has anyone seen the micrometer adjustment device pictured? And, there is a modern Belding and Mull that is $75 what is a fair price?
Thank you,
Charles

Buy of the century on the #6 Ideal measure.  Have never seen that nice micrometer device before.  Hell of a score!

I've got a #6 and 3 #5 Micrometers, but I have never seen nor heard of a #6 Micrometer in all of my reading and research.  If that is indeed an original, it is exceedingly rare, and even if it's not original, it sure is cool!  The guys at ARTCA (Antique Reloading Tool Collectors' Association) would like to hear about it, I'm sure.  Some of them have been working several years on a history of the development of the Ideal/Lyman powder measure family.

I have also NEVER seen such a wonderful micrometer adjustment. I'm pretty sure it will be after market but, so very well made.

The #5 micrometer powder measure didn't come into being until the 30's as I remember and it doesn't look anything like yours.

It is a later one, the first generation where brass hoppers.

At $75, it's only a slight deal, nothing like the deal on your #6.

I'm wondering if this Powder measure is perhaps an experimental Lyman/Ideal tool room prototype. The workmanship seems to be too good to be otherwise. Did factories send out prototypes in the early 20th.C. for testing by well known shots, maybe in the Schuetzen fraternity who required very accurate powder charges?

The quality of the workmanship with the need for precision manufacture may of course have put it out of reach for most shooters bearing in mind
the years of the Depression, money was scarce back then Cry

Yep, the answers came in almost immediately on ARTCA.  Those guys know some stuff about reloading tools!  Cool

Thanks for the info. I applied for the collectors forum and just need to wait for approval.

Also, my other #6 has the charging handle up against the body and the handle swings in the front of the measure. This one has a pin inserted into the boss on the front and the handle rides on that and the handle swings behind the measure. ???????

Nice #6 measure. Never saw another like it. Like others said the workmanship seems too good for it to be homemade.

Hello Joe,

Thanks for the URL, it seems to be quite rare, so a very nice find for bohemianway. If the seller reads this thread, I'd bet he's chewing bullets right now.Sad  It does go to show though that bargains can still be found. Smiley

Thanks for the help. The URL showed the micrometer as being made in Minneapolis which is where I acquired it. Hopefully there are more lurking in the wings. The dealer I bought it from got it at an auction.

Thanks again,
Charles

I rarely see the #6 for sale, and when they do they're always too much money! I have several #5 measures, and see them a lot at affordable prices.
I'd love to stumble on a #6 at that price, or even twice that price!
