Hmmmmmmmmm, does that mean that the newer Stevens 44's are a "bolt action" rifle?

Phil,

Looks like 1902 (handwritten date), but may be sliding into 1903.
It contains a notation from Stevens that says "We would respectfully call your attention to the following list of goods introduced by us since January 1, 1901, ..." so maybe you can try to bracket the time frame from that.

Frank,

Glad you were the one to say it.   Grin

cmm;  it is in good condition. it is 32/40 with the locking lug on the hammer, it has traces of case color good blue and wood is good,  however the rifling is only fair. action is very tight, thinking of a reline or rebarrel to 25/20   art

  Thanks for that Art;

I have the same rifle, i.e., 32-40 WCF Stevens M-44 with the hammer lug to support the breech block.  I am the second owner, having bought it from an Amish farmer who used it for deer hunting only in the Fall and placed it back up on the kitchen wall until next year.

When I showed it to my friend, the barrel maker for his opinion, he advised against a reline project.  His advice was to shoot it for awhile notwithstanding the small amount of pitting just down from the chamber end.

He was right, the little bit of corrosion had no deleterious consequences in my rifle's accuracy.

Have you been shooting yours yet?  If not try it out with cast lead bullets and see if it proves itself.

@BP:  Thanks.   I've had other indications that the "bolts" design appeared in 1901, but this seems to confirm it.

The highest s/n with screws that I have logged is 14542

The lowest s/n with bolts is 15329

So we have 1901 as one signpost for dating 44s from their serial numbers.

Thanks!

Phil

Phil,

Glad to help.
I took another look, and nothing I currently have falls between the two numbers you've given.
Will PM if I encounter anything that does.
