i'm just getting into bpcr loading after over 55 years of only smokeless reloading for rifles and pistols.  i've poured through all the popular books and vids for months.  imho, there isn't a book or video out there than will work better than getting a human being mentor who knows his bp stuff.  there are too many bp nuances, with many different processes and materials to understand and successfully adopt into good rounds that deliver good accuracy than the super-easy-to-load-and-shoot smokeless rounds.  ymmv, but that's just the way i've found it to be.

I used to believe that. When there was no more hair to pull out, went back to basics. Stopped sizing my brass. Clean the brass install a primer add black powder, set a wad on it drop a bullet on that and go shoot.  Eliminated many problems. I get good BP accuracy.

Think maybe that's why there are few books written on the subject, too simple.

i totally agree, joe, and i'm poised to prove that reloading really accurate bpc rounds won't require the use of dies and press.  it's just plug 'n' play, for the most part.   Cool  love the roller in yer avatar, too!

I agree simple is better. Again, I am not looking for ways to load my cartridges for the most part.

That's not a roller in his avatar. Looks like a Stevens 44 1/2,I'm guessing made by CPA, but it could be a nice original. Could be a 44 actually, so I guess it could call it a roller. Too small a pic to tell.

Something to read, something interesting. Yep, I understand that.

I read Paul Mathews book many years ago. Full of stuff I had already tried. Never saw Mathews name in any match results lists so he was always a bit of a curiosity to me.

Last year noticed Lyman was offering a Mathews .45 tapered spitzer. Looked very interesting so got one and gave it a try. On paper at 200 meters my rifle shoots that bullet into tidy eight inch groups. I shouldn't be able to clean the pigs at 300M but have done it both times I used it.
My very accurate Saeco 525 shoots tiny groups at 200 meters, like ten shots touching. Last weekend only got five rams with it.  There is some voodoo and mojo mixed in with BP.

I have not, though it looks similar to the book John Boy posted which is too centered around BPCR competition. However when doing a search for that book, I found this that might be a more along the lines of what I am looking for. I ordered it along with the Lyman cast bullet hadbook.

Any suggestions for a real in depth book on reloading black powder cartridges? I mean the type of book that has everything you would ever want to know and more (if one exists).

Thanks

if yer looking specifically for details on the all the process phases of bpcr reloading, from building a match load to to compression to fouling control to cleaning brass and barrel, look no further than croft barker's book "the black powder cartridge silhouette handbook".  it's very timely and up to date, which some of those others are not. don't matter a bit which match discipline it's aimed at - i got it for the reloading process, as i'm not into the silhouette match.
