Winchester 1885 32/20 Low Wall

Just collected another nice example with a "heavy "octagonal barrel. There are a number of stamps on the barrel, starting from the breach an oblong with what seems to be a W with a vertical line through it, then on the right hand side 32WCF. Under the woodwork are the markings X2 W.C.F.then VP in an oblong then P in a circle. In front of the woodwork is what appears to be 1 on the bottom of the barrel. It has the normal Winchester stamps on the top strap and serial no. under(116283). The rear sight is the one with a screw holding the fine sight element in and the front sight  has the crossbar in its own dovetail with the blade as a separate piece. The foreend has a schnarbel horn inlay. Attaching photos (hopefully), any info greatly appreciated. David A.ps. cant get photos to post will try again tomorrow.D

It looks like you have found a late model low wall in 32WCF and also known as the 32-20.  The VP stands for viewed and proofed and the p in the circle is another proof mark.  The number 1 is the weight of the barrel which is the lightest barrel Winchester made.  If there is an A at the tip of the lower tang; that indicates it is a coil spring action.  If no A, then a it's a leaf spring action.  I suspect yours is a coil spring by the serial number but I have seen leaf spring models mixed in that serial number range.  Sights sound pretty standard. It should be a pretty handy little rifle.  Bob

A #1 weight barrel would be pretty standard for a .32-20, and not really considered a "heavy" barrel. Anything larger, like a #2, #3, etc. would be a heavy barrel for one in .32-20 caliber.

From the looks of the photo5 picture, I think the front sight was installed 180 out from standard.

I think what he means is that the sight was put in backwards. Dale.

High part of the front sight should be towards the rear.

The P in the circle would indicate that it was a mail order barrel and was fitted outside of the factory.
