No one seems to know what these markings mean.  Ledball

One of my two 44 1/2's has this as well, so it sounds like it's fairly common, whatever it means.

I feel deprived.  One of mine (which happens to be apart) has only a single "O".

The Model 44 had a digit from 2 to 5 stamped there, to indicated barrel weight as supplied from the factory.  Could they have started some sort of new code on the 44 1/2?   My catalogs don't indicate anything.

As everyone is saying, no one knows what the marks mean. Some say the "0" means no options and the "EX" means it came with extras, seems logical but, it doesn't hold up.

Here is one of my 44 1/2's, marked 44 1/2, 0 and then a 9 that I've never seen on any others but, it's a little crooked and could have been added later by?

That's the trouble with Stevens history... you can't send for a factory record like you can for many Winchesters. Unless you have the original sales receipt for the Stevens, or other verifiable provenance, it's a guessing game.

And the passing of almost 100 years has allowed a lot of time for parts swapping (should I call that upgrading or restoration so no feathers are ruffled??), which causes additional confusion.

'Fraid not.   Stevens was sold to Westinghouse during WW1, and made a vast number of Moisin-Nagants, until the Red Revolution.  Right after Congress started a post-war investigation into "war profiteering" by Westinghouse, there was a fire (of suspicious origin by some accounts), which destroyed all the Stevens records.    Some things never change.

Has anyone ever seen a third number like the #9 (or any other number) stamped in my rifle above?
