I plan on using 4 grs of unique powder in a .22 Hornet case with a 33 gr flat nose bullet. The rifle is an original win. 1898 low-wall . What is your opinion? Thanks for your answer Hank45

Well it shouldn't be an issue, as I see many people using a 5.0 gr. charge with a heavier bullet. Didn't even know they made a 33 gr. .22 bullet? I've used the 40 gr. bullets as my lightweight load, but not anything lighter.
Is that a cast bullet, or jacketed? If it's cast, you might get some leading in the bore. Might need a jacketed, gas checked, or start out at 3.0 grs. and work up until you see if it leads the bore or accuracy drops off.

marlinguy, the bullet is from a custom mould> I chose a 33 gn bullet because my barrel twist is 16 and according to greenhill formular that is the weight to use.

Unique being a fast powder, I'd start low also with the 33gr LFN bullet.  Who made this bullet?  Even Ideal never had a mold for a 33gr except the 37gr 225107 GC

I'd be a little concerned about the case sealing with that little powder. Might get some blowback around the mouth with only 2 grs. of Unique.

Are you shooting a plain base bullet?  I have a Lyman 48 gr. (I think, I'm doing this from memory) gas check bullet that I can't get the gas checks to seat on without distorting the bullets.  Those I do get seated don't shoot worth a hoot anyway.  Has anyone done good shooting with cast bullets in a Hornet or is it just me?

Hello, Hank45.  Is your low-wall chambered for the .22 WCF.?  I have a .22 Hornet on a panneled Borchardt action.   1-14" Shillen brl.  I had Fred Leeth make up copies of the Ideal 22636 @45grs & 55grs.  both P.B. & G.C.  I havn'e worked alot with the little 45gr. P.B., but what shooting I have done, it's very accurate.  I am using around 7.0grs. H4227.  I got on a clean-bore kick several years ago & was experimenting with fast clean burning shotgun powders..American Select..no loading data so I was working up low & slow.  It only took around 3.0grs..and once accuracy was achieved..any more..even .1gr. would cause patterns..It did burn clean..but those tiny charges got lost even in the small Hornet case & fliers were too common.  IMR Trail Boss might be a good future project.
