The bad news is that my older catalogs and other such notes and records are in Deep Six storage.  However, while Mr. Trevor may well be right, my memory is that there was a catalog, compiled by either James Serven or Butterfield & Butterfield.  Also, I am very sure that over the years I have seen a notation comparable to "formerly in the Maurice C. Clark collection" attached to enough single shots to argue that either some sort of listing does/did exist, or that Mr. Clark at least provided a letter of provenance for any gun he sold.

Serven may well have had some of the guns. All his ammunition was sold thru the late Paul Parsons who was one of the premier cartridge collectors.
One rifle that comes to mind Clark sold is the "famous" Billy Dixon Sharps Borchardt. And he is noted a number of times in the Sellers Sharps book.

With all respect to Mr. Trevor and the admission that my memory isn't what it used to be, the fight at Adobe Walls that gave rise to Dixon's incredible shot took place in 1874, long before the Borchardt was likely even on the drawing board; therefore, Dixon's Sharps was a side hammer.  Not to say that Mr. Clark didn't claim to have owned it.

Mr. Lawrence, I sir am well aware of what type rifle Mr. Dixon used at Adobe walls. I am refering to a Borchardt rifle M-78 with a silver plaque inlet into the buttstock having the inscription "TO BILLY DIXON IN MEMORY OF ADOBE WALLS' . It has shown up at gun shows here in the west over the years for sale. No one ever doubted MC as after all he was a very good USED CAR SALESMAN. Grin

I did not intend to irritate, but have run across 2 lots of Sharps items labeled  "from the M. C. Clark collection".
A very nice side hammer rifle cut patch-box stock, and a assortment of ammo.
Would someone please care to ID the ammo for me ?
I can post pics, or is this another thread ?

Frankford, It was not you. It might be better to post the pictures on a new thread as after a while they cease to be read. "Help id ammo would work"  MC died about 1965 so the items have laid about for quite a while.

Little late with this but YES there was a listing of the M.C. Clark collection done by F. Theadore Dexter. Going thru a 2011 magazine article on Sharps rifles they reproduced the listings and also the photographs.
