32 RF to 32-20

I just purchased a H&A falling block that supposed to be 32 RF. Looks like it is 32-20 instead, good bore and slugs .310. I test fired with 3.9 unique and 120 gr lead bullet. Am I to hot. Shpuld be in the 1050 fps range. Would I be safer with say 12 gr Black Powder.

While BP might be safer, I think your smokeless load will be fine. Max pistol loads are 4.5 with a 115 gr cast or jacketed bullet and they are 14K pressures. Always check the barrel for looseness after a shooting session. If it loosens go to black.

BTW, nice little 932.

I have several 9xx series H&As, one of which I converted to shoot .32 Long Colt.  I'd be mighty leery of .32-20 in that rifle, but if you stick to subsonic loads and very light bullets it will probably be OK.

Remember the .32 RF had a very slow twist.

My Unique load in the .32 LC with an 87 grain bullet is 2.3 grains.   Your load is about the same pressure according to Quickload.

Correction:  my load is about 6000psi, your .32-20 load is about 11000psi.   (Misread the data in QL - sorry)

IMHO that's a bit much for the 932 barrel retention scheme.  I'd go to an 90 grain bullet and 3.5 grains or less of Unique.

My first H&A is a factory 32-20 and is more robust than my later 932 in 32RF.  They are different models.  Converting the 932 to 32 Colt is ridiculously easy.  Just make a new link, holes  slightly farther apart.  Some H&As had two holes in the bottom of the link.  The only hard part is getting the link out of the block as mine was not drilled completely through the block so I had to drill a pilot hole from the right side of the block and drive out the top link pin with the skinniest pin punch I could buy in a small town.  The 32 colt is simply the CF version of the 32 RF.  The 32 S&W is a fatter case.  The 932 apparently was never intended to be chambered with 32-20.  I do have a Ballard No. 2 in 32 with the either-or firing pin, now 32-20 but that's a much stronger action.
Free advice:  Hang out at gun shows and scarf up all the 32 Colt you can find.

Nice.   Probably no louder than a paintball gun, too.
