Print Post
New to the site & would like some help with smokeless powder loads.
I have a 1875 C sharps and a Saeco #640 370 gr mold, and sizing to .408".
I any member has any load data or can tell me where to get find it would really help me out. I have found some data for 5744 but, that's about it.
Been looking here for a while, and it's a great site for SSR.
Thank you

I am shooting RCBS 40cal 312gr bullets in a Highwall 4065.  I have been using a starting load of 4227-20 grs. The primers on the loads that I used did not indicate any pressure problems.  Hodgdon's does offer some data for Hodgdon and IMR powders. Watch your pressure!!

At 200yd last Saturday I shot a 99-1X with the Saeco #640 being pushed by 54gr of 2F Swiss in my original Hepburn with a 40-65 GM 14.5" twist barrel. Should have been a 100, but I let one go with a bad hold and got the 9. Based on the targets above, you might want to stay with black.

I've used 21.7 grs of RL7 or 22 grs of 4759 with good results.

The targets posted are not great but are the results of a first attempt to work up a smokeless load for 4065. I too, generally shoot Blk Pwdr in a 4065.  However , that was not the gentleman's question.
Sorry I intruded.

Actually, your targets are fine. Thought the holes along the top edge were bullet holes, but see they are not.
The problem I've found with the loads from "Cartridges of the World" is that they are generally based on such light bullets. The heaviest for the 40-65 is 300gr w/24gr of 5744. The most interesting 40-65 load is the 260gr bullet with 44gr of IMR 3031 giving 1720fps MV. That would come close to filling the case, which is a good thing. Might cut that back a few grains with the 370gr bullet.
The only 370gr bullet I could find was for the 40-90 Sharps BN, which is 28gr of IMR 4198.

Twenty grains IMR 4227 and breech seated bullets will stay in the twenty five ring at two hundred yards when shot from one of my 40-65s. Hard bore rider bullet with tapered grease groove portion. Never tried them fixed.

I've had very good results from 5744.  I wouldn't waste the time trying to develop a load for 4759 because it's no longer available, unless you have a good supply.

Lyman once sold cast bullets for BPCR in 45 and 40 cal. I have attached the Lyman data that came from with the 40 cal bullets. I used 400 grn Snover bullets from 3 sources with this data for several powders and never got much accuracy with those bullets.

I interpolated this data up for 325 grn bullets and got spectacular accuracy.
The 325 grain bullet was an NEI gas check bullet intended for the .405 Win but it came out small for the .405 at .410. These were gas checked with Lyman 41 cal checks and lubed in a .410 die. I had unburned powder with 21 grains of SR4759. I upped the loads to 22 and 23 grains and got better accuracy and the unburned grains disappeared.
SR4759 is also excellent for me with the 45-70 at similar velocities.
I had 5 lbs when it was announced that SR4759 was being discontinued this year. I bought an 8lb jug that I hope will last me. If I run out I will at least know I had a lot of fun at 23 grains per shot on avg.

I have an Axtell No. 1 .40-70 straight (2 1/2")..which is very close to C.C. of the .40-65.  As a matter of fact, I used that very Lyman load chart when I first started loading for this rifle.  I have been using a Fred Leeth nose-pour copy of the Ideal 300 gr. 405 Win. bullet..(the original Ideal shot so nice, I had Fred make a mould).  I have had very good accuracy of around an inch at 100 yds. using H4895 & Varget.  I found charges a few grains under the suggested start loads were most accurate.   I use .032" veg. fibre wad under the bullet.

Case capacity for the 40-65WCF is listed as 68.52 and the 40-70SS (40-65SS for those who wish to be historically correct) is 72.98, or about 3.5gr of H20 larger. In practical terms, likely no difference.
