Trail Boss and Unique loads 40-70SS

Does anyone have any load suggestions for Trail Boss and/or Unique powders for a Shiloh No. 3 in 40-70SS please? I normally use Swiss 4 (1 1/2 FG) but have these powders and thought they might be OK for my Shiloh??? Swiss here in the UK is very expensive. I use 20:1 alloy with a variety of moulds, Hoch, PJ, Brooks etc., all 400 grn plus.
Any thoughts about these powders?
Thanks,
Chris B Cool

I've used 10 gr of Unique in my 40/63 Ballard, with a breech seated 385 gr bullet. Iit has almost identical case capacity as the 40/70ss. I think you could safely go to 12 gr with fixed ammo in your rifle.

I have found and used UniQ loads from 25-20 32-20 32-40  38-55  40=65 and 45-70..  with good results..  get several old Lyman books,  # 41,  42,   43,  44,  and 45..  old info but a place to start..

If you get the current Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook, they have loading data for the 40/70ss. Using 4759, 5744, RX7, 4198 & Varget but, none of your powders.

i apologize in advance if you already know the following ...

if it may help, i use trail boss for .45-70, .30-06, .308win and .243win.  with the .45-70 i make up both reduced loads (mainly for kids or the recoil sensitive) and full case loads (which really zip along).  as mentioned in the data link provided above, the suggested start load will be 70% of the case volume and that will make for very mild .45-70 loads with bullets in the 300 to 400 grain range ... but charging the case to near full *uncompressed* capacity will yield some decent bullet speeds and good accuracy, with a good burn and no powder residue in the barrel (unlike some other smokeless powder, such as aa5744).  i check the full case capacity for each case brand and bullet type used, as these items can vary a bunch.  bullet length and seat depth might be different and that will vary the resulting case capacity.  for my starline cases i get the following ...

arizona lazer 405gr - 18.22/full 12.8/70%

lyman postell 535gr - 17.00/full 12.0/70%

cheers and enjoy!
