Mold/Bullets:Marlin Ballard 40-60; picture request

Hey All,   Just got my first Marlin Ballard and wondering if any of you would post pictures of molds and or bullets.   I'd be interested in pictures of a 40-70 or 40-63 or even a 40-65 mold/bullet, along with any recommendations for same.

I've read here were a 330gr - 370gr is advisable.

I got this mold with the rifle but it will be a 240ish gr bullet so not sure how it will fly.   Still need to obtain or reform some brass since I only have five reformed 410 cases.

Right now, making a good selection for a mold is my main focus.

Thanks,  John

Best Regards,
John

That's a very nice looking custom mold. Although to short for longer ranges.

You first need to measure your twist rate. I believe Ballards used both 20 and 22 twists. I was worried about that when I got my 40/63. It turned out to be 20 twist so, I was happy. A 22 twist will take a bullet as long as 1.3 and the 20 a bullet 1.35 or longer.

Are you going to be shooting fixed or breech seated? If fixed and yours is a 40/63, you will have to neck turn the brass, at least I had to with mine. Most 40/63 (as I understand) where made for paper patched bore size bullets.

What is the head stamp on your brass?

I would recommend the following mold for BS and fixed cartridges. There is also the 410660 (385 gr) and the 410663, Snover bullet (400 gr), both for fixed but, can be BSed.

Copied from the Lyman site:

Lyman 395gr 410678
A new Paul Matthews design. This tapered 40 cal bullet is ideal for black powder silhouette shooting. It allows for heavier powder charges because it can be seated out of the case farther than other designs.

Thanks Frank... went and looked at those designs.  Appreciate it.  I've only shot fixed so likely fixed will be what I start with and maybe end with.   Head stamp on the five cases are CBC 410 so the head diameter is a mite small.      I'll do a chamber cast and then send that to RMC.   I've not done a chamber cast with this particular extrator set-up so wondering if Cerosafe would be an issue if cast all the way to the chamber opening.    I'd think RMC would want/need it to full diminsion.     Never shot paper patch but I'm just 60, so still a young dog:-)
Thanks Again,
John

You also need to measure the groove dia. Mine was .410 and I think it's a pretty standard size for the 40/63.

So, all those Lyman 40's will stabilize.

I've used 405 Win , 7x57R and 9.3x74 cases for mine. The 7x57R is a little short.

To use grease groove, case loaded bullets, you have to fire form a case, measure the ID of it and then turn the necks by the amount that it takes to slip fit the bullet.

If you have RMC make them from a chamber cast, have them do the inside of the neck at .412.

"If you have RMC make them from a chamber cast, have them do the inside of the neck at .412"

Thanks again... Never messed with neck turning (or whatever its properly called) so good heads-up for me.

The 410s would sure need it:
**wall thickness at .011
**inside diameter of a fired case is right at .408
**seller's gunsmith reports groove size to be .408.

I'll do a compression slug in a couple spots just to confirm as well as the chamber cast.   But if I confirm .408 then theoretically I'd need wall thickness at the case mouth to be about .010 or less to chamber a .410 bullet.

The bore looks to be quite good, not much corrosion at all, just a few spots of gas cutting so I think it will slug pretty consistent down it's length.

Need to order some cerrosafe.

John
