32-20 winchester not cpa

is anyone shooting the standard 32-20 breach seating? or tried out a standard .308 .311 barrel?  If so what bullet, twist rate, powder charge, and results. I think most common factory barrels would have a slow twist that would limit bullet weight to 150 gr. I would be interested in any information. Joe

I set up a HW in .308, 32/20 for my wife. I set the BSer to just in front of the case (.010), they have a very short throat.

She shoots a 180 gr, Ron Long spitzter with 10.0 gr 296. She has done very well for her skill level. She has shot a 241 5c with it.

If you have a original twist, I get the Lymam 311410 mold, it's 130 gr, made for the M1 Carbine with a 20 twist and should stabilize in the 32/20. You can also use the 3118 mold. You can also use AA#9, WC820 or H108 at 1 gr less.

Use a Remington case, as they last much longer and start with 8 gr 296/H110.

There is a lot of data out there for the 3118 and faster powders for any action.

My data only applys in stronger actions.

Thanks for your reply. I am going to order a low wall 32-20 18 inch twist and yes I know it is not a cpa. I bought a 32-40 cpa it was delivered April 29th and yesterday I went over 500 rounds down the barrel. for some reason I want another single shot and as I cant afford another cpa at this time I am ordering the uberti. The CPA is truly a work of art. I haven't started on finishing the stock but if I had another single shot I could shoot while working on the stock. Somehow I have been bitten with the single shot bug. I don't have many just a Stevens 44 in 25-20 Winchester, a ubirti 218 bee, a h&r 357,223, and a 32 magnum I made on a shotgun. I have started thinking of nothing else but single shot rifles. is there a cure for this? joe

I have a lyman 311241 150 gr. I am thinking if it doesn't stabilize I will put in the mill and shorten the mould a bit. in measuring the bullet it looks like it will work. I use that bullet in a 32 H&R magnum I made and it shoots well with a case full of wcc 680. I am going to check on what bullet moulds I own and see if I have a few I could shorten. I do know I have a couple 30 caliber single cavity moulds that I wouldn't feel right about selling because of condition. they would be a good place to start. Joe

The 311241, should stabilize in a 18 twist by my twist program. I would sure try it.

I've drawn up several versions of the 241 from molds that I have. The standard 241 has a .115 base band and is .875 long. I have a Integral handle Ideal marked 308241 S. I don't know if the "S" is for special or short (It would normally mean smaller dia.). This one has a base band that is only .075, .040 shorter. If you shorten yours, I'd suggest trying it at .040 shorter.

I measured a lyman 311241 cast from ww. the diameter it pretty well .313 on bottom band then .312 for the others. I checked out the moulds that I have and found a 31141 single cavity that measures large almost .314 that might be a good one to shorten to around 140 gr. several years ago I bought a experimental mould from cbe that measures .315 I think if I cant get anything to work I might be able to mill it down to around 140 and give it a try. I did go ahead and order a cimmaron low wall in 32-20 with double set triggers and pistol grip stock. paid $999 so if it dosent work out I don't think I will lose much on it. it should be here mid week.  I need to find out what kind of breach seating tool I need for a low wall. maybe someone has some plans so I can make one. joe

I'm new and trying to understand this discussion; Is what you fellows are describing using a .300 bore/.308 grooves barrel chambered in 32-20 using .311 bullets?

Yes, pretty much. .311's are a standard casting size in 30 cal. because most resize them to there needs and GC them at the same time if they're of that design. For this cartridge, you only need a bullet of .309 to seal the bore on a .308 groove to prevent gas cutting.

I have a low wall in 32-20 with a .312 bore and a 1-12 twist that I picked up early this summer. The guy I bought it from also gave me a 311410 mould. He told me he won a few matches with this gun but didn't remember what powder he used with it. I started out at 50 yards with 5.0 grains of IMR 4227 and worked up to 7.0 grains. It showed promise thru out the session. Our 100 yard bunker was down for repair and the 15x power Unertl I got with it doesn't have a focus ring on it so I couldn't move out to 150 yards. Will report back after I mount a new scope. I am breach seating the bullet with a plugged case.

If you are thinking of Breech-seating a .30 caliber. Get ahold of Jim Borton and get one of his .30 bollets for breech-seating. You won't be sorry.

Went out today and shot my low wall. Looks like 9.0 grains of 4227 with the 311410 bullet may be the winner. Shot it over the crony at 1265 fps. At 200 yards it grouped nice. Hope it wasn't the wind bunching them up! Grin It was windy today. Remember, I do have a 1-12 twist .312 bore.

I took my uberti low wall out last week it has a 1-18 twist so the heaviest bullet has been the 311241. so far the best 100 yard group has been with lyman 311 8 with 5.5 gr. of 7625 I shot an honest 7/8 inch group. the saeco 140 gr. #630 shot just over an inch best was 1.25 inches for 5 shots. now I must admit I was not breach seating, but will start very soon. If only the twist was faster. oh well it is what it is. argie1891

FWIW,

I'll be starting up my 1:15 twist 30-20 sometime soon - still designing the bullet for shooting BP.  Was thinking of using a bullet of approx. 160gr.  No breechseating in my case thouth, but a slip-fit in the case.
Rifle is a Martini cadet, barrel is a shortened take-off Palma match barrel.  Hopefully it will be able to cope with the fouling.
