I was asked to post some pictures and measurements or a breach seater that I just purchased on eBay.

I was setup for 30-30 and I am going to re-do it for 38-55

Here is the assembled device followed by the individual parts.   I will post some measurements shortly.

If anyone wants the original size photos, PM me your email address.

Here is the body.  It is 3.323 inches long.  There is a 3/8" hole 2.3 inches deep from the rear and 1/4 " hole the rest of the way through.  The slot for the cam is 1/4" wide and 1.36 " deep.  The lobe at the front is .706 " and is a loose fit in a High Wall breach block mortice.

Here is a drawing of the coupler nut.  The 1/4 x 28 threaded portion is .750 inches deep.  The 10x32 allen head screw allows for depth adjustment.  The shaft is 2.535 inches long with .4 inches at the front threaded 10x32 that the 1.425 inches brass section screws into.  The tail end of the shaft is threaded 1/4 x 28, .8 inches long.  The cam is 1.125 inches in diameter.

Great write up Jack, thank you. What is the diameter between the two ends of the body?

Frank.
It is just under 5/8",  Looks like the body was made from  5/8" x 1" flat bar stock.

I finally got around to making a prototype mostly out of aluminum to see what worked best in the machining order.  I ended up drilling the body all the way through 3/8" and using a 1/4" id bronze bushing at the front.  I also threaded the coupler all the way at 1/4-28 which is easier and works the same as the original version.  I am using this with a very tight chamber in my 32-40 High Wall that I at this point needs to use a plugged case only since I can't expand a case mouth enough to slip a bullet in to and still chamber it.  So, I cut about 3/8" off the front end to allow room for the entire case length.  It works just fine.  Next project is to see if I can adapt this style to a Ballard.

Ballards are a little tricky.  I made on that pushes off the sight base.

Any chance of a photo or hand sketch of your Ballard breech-seater? I am always in need of ideas.

Excuse my ignorance, but what's the purpose of a "breach seater".
Thanks

It just a device used to drive the bullet into the rifling ahead of the case, with the objective being greater accuracy.
