Ooops... sorry about that question (each year, same time?) B'duckie -- see you say that originally.   Good on you mate!  I've only got 20 acres and nieghbors in the wrong direction, otherwise I'd be able to get maybe 800yds.   I'm out in the woods otherwise - West of you in the Panhandle of Idaho, maybe 35 miles from the Canadian line.   That is when I'm not in Oklahoma.   What's your closest town.  I'd be interested in seeing how long a drive it is from say Bonners Ferry Idaho.   Not presently there (Too bad to since I have a lot of rounds loaded up in my 38-55) but maybe in future years.

Best Regards,
John

Bobduck,

Would that be Bigfork, Montana?  I have a friend in Swan Lake and I get down that way every 2-3 years for a visit.  I'd like to bring my CPA 38-55 down for a try when I get it put together.

John Shaw

Sorry I've been slow responding to you, I was out of town for a week.

Yes, it is Bigfork, MT.   My wife and I have an art gallery in downtown Bigfork.

I do this informal shoot every year the end of September into early October.  I go over to the homestead for about a week and others come for part of this time.

If you're interested in coming some year get ahold of me.   It's 37 miles north of Chester, MT and about 1 1/2 miles south of the Canadian border.   There is about 5 acres of camping right from where we shoot.  I have six permanent targets from 340 yards to 1000.   We also put up some temporary targets while we are there.

This year I'm putting up an 8 ft x 8 ft plywood backing so we can shoot groups at 750 yards.

I'm also building a "bunkhouse" for those who don't have a camper.  It's just and 8 ft x 10 ft building with four bunks in it.  I'll  use it for storage when we're not there.  Also a temporary "outhouse".   Tents don't work over there because occasionally it gets very windy.

I'm leaving for this year's trip on Saturday and will return on October 5th.  I'll post about the shoot and maybe more video or pictures.

This invitation is open to anyone who is interested in having an opportunity to do some long range shooting in an informal atmosphere.  This is not just a range but an area to shoot.  We can shoot in an 180 degree arc from straight north around to the east to straight south so more than one type of shooting can be done at the same time.  The nearest neighbor in the directions we shoot is 2 3/4 miles away.

I know it's very isolated but that adds to the adventure.

Anyone interested in joining me in the future get in contact.

B'duckie

B'duckie,

Thanks for the reply.  I may look you up next time I'm down that way.  It sounds like a fun shoot.  I like isolation.  That's the only time I feel comfortable.

Where do you live?

I'm leaving for the homestead tomorrow but also plan to go over there more often during the summer months in the future.  There's a chance I may get in a final shoot over there in late October or early November.

Now that I'm building my bunkhouse it's easier for others to join me who don't have trailers to stay in.

Please get in contact with me if you're coming over this way in the future and we can talk.

Bob,  Are you gonna repeat this year and if so do you know your dates yet?   I'd like to watch me calender just in case travels and money worked out.

Best Regards,
John

I'm planning at least two trips to the homestead this summer and probably a few more.

I have moved our big, one week shoot from the first of October to the end of August this year.

Send me a personal message and I'll give you more details.

Nice country and lots of wheat. Spent part of a summer cutting wheat from Wolf Point to Havre to Ft. Benton to Cut Bank, where it started snowing on the last day of August (started in OK and moved north as the wheat ripened). So much wheat that we hardly made a dent in it in 5wk+ of running 4x 20' Gleaners. Always remember the pucker factor of taking a small ferry across the Missouri not far from Ft. Benton when the water was high and thinking about the swim (or not) if the cable should break. Ferry could carry one combine & pickup. 50yr ago this year. A good summer job.

Looks like fun! My friend Wind shoots longrange with old Marlin repeating rifles at his "U Pick Sagebrush Ranch".
