If your going to BS the rifle, you can't go wrong with 4227 to start. In my 38 XL (actually 357 Max) LW, I use 14.0 gr 4227 and the 35875 (208 gr) Ideal bullet. For yours, I'd start at 14.0 and work up to 16 gr.

You'll need to slug your barrel to know what size diameter bullet you need. You may be able to use the RCBS 200 gr bullet mold, if it will fit your groove. If it's a modern barrel, your probably ok, if it's a orginal, it could have a larger groove.

What are you wanting to shoot with it? Sounds like it would be a very good target rifle and hunting, too.

I'll start with targets. It came with a seater, so I'll try benching it. I appreciate your load suggestions. The barrel is pretty heavy (about a #5 I think) so I probably won't try it hunting. I enjoy working up loads. Thanks again.

Target 35 caliber molds are very hard to come by! It's my understanding the Barry Darr is making molds at this time. It seems like it would be the perfect combo to have him make one for your rifle.

Do you know the twist rate of the barrel?

I had a Darr .35-40. The best load was 16.5 grains of 4227 with a 255 grain Darr or Beveridge bullet. It also shot 16 grains pretty well but 16.5 seamed more consistent. Used the usual Rem. 2 1/2 primer.

I suggest you contact Jim Borton for a 35 caliber mold, bullet cherrie #81 is a 260 grn flat nose like Q'bore mentioned, also cherrie #82 is a spitzer nose 265 grns, or cherrie #108 a 250 grn Pope taper style bullet.
I made a small number of molds for a few local shooters and friends recently but am not going to make any more in the future.

Barry, How big are the base bands on those bullets?  Thanks, Bob

I appreciate all the info. I took the rifle home and cleaned and oiled it. Now it's in the safe and I'm vacationing with the wife, thinking about the rifle. I need to slug the bore and determine the twist. My mind is not on vacation (or maybe it is).

If you have any interest in shooting BP with it you might talk Steve Baldwin. Believe he is shooting a High Wall in 35-40. If you get on his website you might want to put 35-40? in the subject line as he said that he gets so many junk communications that he just erases the ones with 'uninteresting' subjects.
