Maynard mid-range vernier tang sight?

Here's a nice find. While on holidays in the UK my brother (who is not a shooter) found this in a second hand shop and sent it to me. His comments were "the bloke in the shop said it was an old target sight so I thought you'd be interested in it for your collection!! He got it cheap. I did not expect to see a Maynard sight and certainly not from the UK.
It's marked "14", what does this mean?
Also I'm going to have a disc made to fit. Grateful if one of you Maynard collectors out there could provide a photo of what I need and the disc diameter.

Maynard rifles are seldom seen here in Australia, so I was really pleased to get hold of this sight. Any additional  info would be appreciated.
Thank God for younger brothers with a keen eye. I certainly owe him a beer or two when he gets back!!

A close up of the "14" which is the only marking on the sight apart from the vernier scale (0 to 45, about 2.3 inches).

  Hello Mr. Spud ---

I would send you a photo of the patented Hadley "Combination Eye Piece" that would have been included with your vernier staff, but am on my commute to work in 5 minutes upon finishing my cup of coffee.

Mr. John Bly may help you out in the course of today.  Great sight and glad you have it.

Regards,

C.M.M.

If I am correct, it was built on the Hadley Patent which is the only US made rifle sight that utilises a 'Rack and Pinion' to permit sight adjustment. A pity the eye piece is missing, but to expect perfection in a chance buy is perhaps expecting too much. Nice find.

You can get a very close approxamation of the cup size by measuring the patent drawing.

Measure the width of the staff with a good rule or dial calipers, then measure the diameter of the cup. Divide the staff with into the cup dia. That will give you the ratio. Them multiply that ratio times your staff with. That should get you within .000 - .010 of the orginal cup dia.

The threads will be harder but, if no one can supply the thread size, you can turn a soft piece of wood to a approx dia. taper the end and then thread it into hole.

Nice find your brother obtained for you. I have only seen one complete sight and that was on a rifle that was at auction.

The 14 would likely be an assembly number. Neat find! Moodyholler

Spud,
Further to Franks post on measuring the disc size from the patent Drawing and my own post giving you the URL for the patent.

If you are using 'Windows'  go to the URL for the patent and open it up. Left click on the patent drawings which will enlarge them once. Then right click on the drawings and from the menu select 'save as' and save the picture to a folder on your computer. Exit windows and open up the picture with Windows Picture viewer using a right click of your mouse. Once the picture opens you can increase or decrease the size of the picture using the roller on your mouse. It's easier to do than describe, but that way it makes it easier to measure to get your disc diameter. If you need to move around the enlarged page to view different parts, just click and drag. It's really easy once you get the hang of it.

Spud,

I have a late Maynard 16 in .32-35, last night I pulled it out to measure the tang sight cup to measure it for you. Was surprised to re-discover that it was equipted with a Stevens Combination Eye Cup For Vernier Sight - the one which is 1 inch diameter with the small additional disc that offers six different apperatures marked PATD MAY 17 1887. I do not know if the threads on this disc are a Stevens standard or if the cup was supplied or re-cut specifically for the existing Maynard threads. So anyhow I measured it and found the shank is .02 inches and 30 tpi. All this said unfortunately I cannot tell you what the original threads on an original Maynard eye cup would be.

If you intend to put this tang sight on a Maynard which is drilled and tapped for a tang sight here is a link to where you can obtain the necessary screws to mount the sight base to the tang. I have purchased several of these replacement screws and they work just fine. You might want to look at S&S for any other replacement parts needed.

Hello & thanks for all those great suggestions, that's been a great help.
Harry, those patent drawings were just what I needed. I was able to scale up the drawings and get the measurements. A Maynard sight in the UK was a real surprise. You'll have to start checking those "boot sales"... there's bound to be some Borchardt parts lurking in someone's box of bits & bobs!

Frank, great tip about using the wood to get the tread size. I'll file that one away for future reference!

Bob, I got a Stevens eyepiece and it was real close, snug fit.... it would work OK. The threaded section just needs to be a bit longer but that gives me something to work with. Will check S & S (I got a sight from them previously for a Ball & Williams RF Ballard).

Also found some good detailed images of this sight and other Maynard gear on the Halp photo galleries site. That really is a wonderful reference resource.

Thanks again, regards
Pete
