Maynard Percussion Rarity, or Not So?

Question for Resident Maynard Expert/s.

I happened upon a percussion Maynard Carbine with 20 inch barrel which is presently viewable at the Gun Broker Sales web site.  The listing specs. suggests that it is a .52 Caliber, but I am of the opinion that it is a .50 caliber and perhaps was fired as a muzzle loader, instead of a breech loader, ergo, the .020" increase in bore diameter at the muzzle end. ( 0.010" / side).

My question concerns the cartridge extractor slide which is mounted on the right side octagon flat by way of a tapped hole and retainer screw.  Photo No. 2 clearly shows what I am referring to.

Question; was this style extractor O.E.M. or an "after the sale" addition?  I've not seen this element on any other Maynard produced under the Army contracts of the period.

Thanks much,

C.M.M.

Rim recess and extractor not found on any 2nd Model Maynard as they left the factory.  Somebody had a grand idea and executed it on that carbine.  (And executed it's value in the process)

    John --

    Thanks for your reply !

Will you be joining us at the upcoming Columbia Schuetzenverein matches being held in Thurmont, Maryland over the three days of August 01, 02, & 03 ?

It would be nice for us to become acquainted with you, and you with us.

It's a nice facility, not a great distance away, and I believe you would have a good time being there.

Webb, that's definitely an aftermarket cartridge retractor. No Civil War Maynards were ever made in 52 caliber. They are 3 land and groove barrels and the untrained person will measure them wrong. As John in PA said no military Maynards had a counterbored rim recess. No centerfire barrels had rim recesses, only rimfire barrels. The rimfire barrels mated up to the breech face as a safety feature in the event of a ruptured case head.

Thanks Dead-Eye for your expertise and explanation on this modified Maynard carbine.

Photo No. 4 is the best view for seeing the milled recess at the breech end of the barrel.

Hope you had a good trip.
