Question on Molds

I'm curious what others do to prevent the sprue plate screw from changing tention while casting. That is if it doesn't have a set screw to hold the adjustment from the side.

Thanks, Terry Undecided

I install a set screw in the side of the mold.

It is also possible to jam the sprue plate screw with the mould attachment screw.

If the screw hole has a blind bottom, carefully fill the hole with steel filings so that at some point when you do it up tight it will not be able to go any further into the hole!

Here is my method and it has worked well for me for years. Get a spring washer the right size for the screw that holds down your spruplate. Not a lock washer a spring washer there is a difference. Put it under the head of the screw so when tightened down it bears on the top of the spruplate. Tighten it down and back off about a quarter turn. Let the spring hold down the plate. I haven’t galled a spruplate since using this method.

Terry the screw that attaches the mould half with sprue plate attached can be run up tight against the bottom of the screw attaching the sprue plate once you have the sprue plate adjusted correctly.

Very similar idea to what 40Rod is using

I put one of these on the sprue plate and then load it with a spring washer. Very slick for $2

JLouis,

I see what your saying now. My molds with the Saeco blocks have the sprue plate hinge screw and that half handle attaching block in alignment!
but, the new mold I just received yesterday doesn't.
The Lyman Molds I have, have a set screw to hold the adjustment.

Thanks, Terry Smiley

Why don't you put a set screw in it?

I was wrong, after going out to the shop to cast a few bullets to measure today, I found that the mold did have a set screw I hadn't noticed for some reason.
Thanks for all the Great Answers though!
