How did Ron Snover Mark His barrels?

Print Post
I bought a large lot of old barrels, all oversized/overlength and mostly .32 and .33 caliber.  Obviously from an old schuetzen gunsmiths stock.  At least one is a Snover; that one on inspection is cut rifled, and has a particular land/groove form (not metford, but distinctive).  There is another one that is stamped RWS and dated 96.  It is cut rifled with similar form.  I'm thinking it might be a Snover also.  I've lost track of Ron's information, so can't ask him directly.

Anybody remember how he marked his barrels?

Thanks,
dave

Canadian Ron Smith's mark is RKS.  If he made a bad barrel, I can't believe he would let it out of his possession.

Schuetzenmeister, I believe he was refering to the barrels being of a larger diameter and length. IE 2in diameter and 38in long or so. Not the quality.

Right, Tom,

Nothing wrong with these barrels, they are premium barrels.  Cut rifled, 33 inches and big enough to cut 1 1/4" octagons.  The one I know is snover is a large octagon and 33 inches.

Definitely marked RWS, not RKS.  Ron Snover's middle initial is W, that's why I thought it might be his.

Hey Dave I read in an old archive that you replaced the trigger spring in an old remington rolling block with a different one to relieve the insanely heavy trigger pull.  Any suggestions on that today?

Texan:  Go to rollingblockparts.com, and purchase the spring for $10 or spring and screw for $15.  That will drop the pull to somewhere in the 2 to 3 pound range on most actions, and more importantly, will eliminate most if not all of the creep.

I'll try to give Ron a call when I'm at home with the barrels to look at.  I bought a custom barrel from him years ago, and it is excellent.  These ones look to be the same quality.

okay, great.  I saw those listed, but I was afraid they were going to be just like the one I had and not change the pull at all.....

Thanks,

t_exan, I installed those trigger springs in a 7mm rolling block and a Swedish rolling block. I was astounded by the difference those springs made! They are well worth it. Good Luck!

Thanks, Podufa,

That's essentially the same stamps that I have on mine; mines RWS, 1 -14, and 96.  I think it's probably a Snover.  Especially since it's cut rifled and same rifling form as the other one that I know is a Snover.

A big yes on rollingblock parts trigger spring.   I have them on two 7 mm rolling blocks and an 1870 USN rolling block.  The differesne is really amazing.   My only gripe is that they don't work on the New York "safety" Remingtons.   I would dearly love to lighten the trigger pull on my New york SRC.

I have two remingtons rebored by Ron Snover back in the early 1990's  Don't know if he marked the re-bored barrels or not.   Guess I can look if anyone wants to know.

George,  I am fairly sure that the springs will work on a NY contract action.  I believe I've converted my own .50 Alaskan, anyway.  I have several of those actions, I'll look at what it takes to make one work and make one for you.

Is it the split trigger for the half cock safety action that messes with the standard spring working?  Been a long time since I've had one of these apart.
