I've always used FG (GOEX) for all my PB shooting from 32/35 Stevens and 32/40  up to the 45/70.

I found in testing that it was always more accurate than FFG. I believe the reason for the improved accuracy was because there where less "fines" in FG.

This was back in the 80's and 90's when GOEX was the only powder available (it was also only $5 lb at that time Smiley )

I've not tried any of the mulitude of newer (to me) powders but, if there are "fines" in the finer grades, it should still hold up.

I use Goex Fg in one of my .45-70's.  It a very low SD and works pretty well in that rifle.   I use a pretty heavy charge though, at 74gr.

Sometimes playing with different powder granulations pays off.  I have one .45-70 that likes FFFg Express the most, a couple that like FFg Express,  and the above mentioned one that likes Fg.    I think that some of this has to do with bullet fit and chamber dimensions.   For example, in my paper patch rifles I'm quite confident that the slower burning powders are less prone to gas cutting the bullet.

Sorry,

but  3 MOA won't keep the X-ring, so it needs to be better.  Still, Fg can deliver - But I do prefer it in larger-capacity cases (like 577-450 or no.2 Musket) - and as I only have swiss available - and Swiss Fg is quite a bit heavier than 1 1/2 Fg for the same volume - I presume the recoil advantage is just about gone.

Mike, I haven't used Swiss Fg but I imagine it must be pretty dense stuff.  Are you using any compression?

In my .45-70 I use 82gr of Goex FFg Express which denser than the Swiss 1.5 I've got.

With a 0.030 weg fiber + a 0.060" LDPE wad I have 0.115" of PP bullet in the case with a small amount of compression.   Mind you my case has slightly reduced capacity as the chamber is 2.092" long and is 0.474" at the case mouth...

FWIW, I've tried a lot of loads in my .40-70 BN, and the best accuacy has been with Goex FG.

gunlaker,

I have about 0.85-0.95 compression on the 82.5 grs of Fg Swiss.  The compression depends on how much time I want to use to trickle the powder into the case.

I could probably shoot that load with zero compression if I took a cork wad out of the case.

Keep on hav'n fun!

Nice. Have you done any longer range shooting with it (out to 600yd)? Have been jonesing for an 1874 in 40-70BN. Folks keep going on about how it won't shoot. I think they just don't want to make the effort to get a BN cartridge to strut its stuff. What parent case are you starting with? Am also thinking that might have my 40-65 Hepburn rechambered in the Rem 40-70BN and have the reamer done to allow 45-70/90/100/basic cases be the parent. Plus, would be historically correct for the Hepburn.

No, haven't shot at longer ranges. I'm just a casual shooter and my club has limited range. The brass used is 45 basic brass stamped CSA which I formed and trimmed. I have also used Starline .45-90 trimmed and formed. It works well to. A lot of folks Poo Poo this caliber, but for my casual shooting it has proved completely satisfactory. It is also pleasant to shoot in my #3 Shiloh with curved buttplate. I bought this rifle new from Shiloh almost 25 years ago, Its a keeper.

Hmmm........... Starline gave us several gift certificates for our Eastern Regional BPTR match at the end of the month. If I win one, think I'll use it towards some .45 basic or 45-90 cases.

If you are shooting BP you will want to anneal the brass before you load it the first time.

If your rifle is not in 7.62 and you can't hit what you are aiming at with de-linked machinegun ammo you are a pretender.
