Probably 1895.

I can't afford it, but maybe somebody else here can....

Something NOT RIGHT with the S/N numbers looks like the one on the lower tang has been restamped Ken

I can't guess how many deer the seller's father shot with that rifle, but has seen quite a bit of tinkering over its lifetime. The serial numbers on the tang are questionable as mentioned and the stock is obviously a replacement. I question if it is even an original Stevens as the wood does not have the appearance of walnut.

Now that you mention it, the numerals on the tang are not the same size or font as others I've surveyed in the same s/n range.

The first thing I noticed when I saw it on GB was that the stock and forearm did not match. That and the fact that the .38-55 in a 44 is more cartridge than I want in a 44 action. Black powder or very low end smokeless loads only.

Jim: when I first looked at this item,I thought it looked like Elm? Like you suggested it didn't look like walnut ! The idea of shooting 38-55 thru an Ideal, is not not a great idea. The stress on an Antique action with a "big cal" like 38-55 is frankly dangerous, if the seller's Dad shot it in this cal OK.
The other fixes on the item, cause me to question everything. I do believe if you own the item, you can do what you want to it Huh.I purchased a Bubba  H&A big shotgun action made into a 45-70 carbine!!! I knew what a mess, all I wanted was the action. It was in pretty good shape, for what I wanted,22r lng. bench rifle. I guess the caveat(let the buyer beware) is true and it looks like members here BEWARE.57thahc

The serial has been overstamped --you can still see the original numbers.

I agree. It has been over stamped. After fooling around with the picture on my computer I believe the original number stamped on the tang is 8177 over stamped with 4736. I may be wrong but I don't think so. Smiley I'm not surprised there hasn't been a single bid for it.

Since the over stamp is so visible, why would someone go to the trouble, unless they think we're fools.  I don't think it's a Stevens barrel.  Ledball

I took a close look at it again today. Apparently someone tried to make the # on the tang match the # on the barrel. Bad idea. Any alteration of a serial # is a federal offense as I recall.

I think the authorities may have difficulty proving 'who dun it', unless it is also an offence to be in possession of a firearm where the serial number   has been altered. Undecided

It’s a shame that the rifle had such a high reserve on it that it didn’t sell. There is nothing special about it, the serial numbering is at best questionable, and it is chambered in a cartridge that is “too much club” for the action. Given that the butt stock is poorly replaced and the forend is beat there is no value there either. What this is is a suitable action to turn into a nice .22 and restock. But not at the inflated starting price that was asked.

Is something going on with the price of 44's? At the Colorado Collectors Show, they were asking $800 for beaters, then up, way up.

Since the original 44's were chambered in .38-55, I wouldn't have a problem buying or owning an original in .38-55 myself. I might never shoot it, or if I did it would be very low pressure loads. But the gun just isn't original, so it's value is that of the accumulative parts.
I'm not surprised that nobody bid on it, as the $500 starting price is more than it's worth for parts to me. I'm also not sure if it's a Stevens barrel or not. The caliber roll stamp sure looks the same as used by Stevens, but with all the great pictures the seller has, he somehow avoided the top barrel flat where the maker's roll stamp would be! At least he got good pictures of the over stamped serial number!
