Chris you may be on to something there. Chrony was only 10 feet off the muzzle. I could have been recording wad shrapnel.

At this point I think I have the load established for best group. I've been up and then back down the scale in 1 gr increments from 65 to 85grs.

Most chronographs need to be set at a distance as outlined by the manufacture or your readings will be in accurate. I don't think setting it out as far as the wires would allow would then be beneficial.

I have a Shooting Chrony. You can set it near the muzzle for MV readings or at the target for TV readings or anywhere in between. By taking readings from two or more points on the bullets path you can accurately calculate ballistic coefficients.

But for the purpose of working up a load a velocity sampling from anywhere along the flight path will show ES and SD as the sample point is static and the string is the variable.

John, when shooting black powder with wads, I get wild readings unless the crony is further than 10 feet.

It works well when shooting smokeless to put it at 10 feet though.  I've had enough trouble that I don't even bother trying closer.  If for some reason absolute muzzle velocity is desired, then it could be corrected for.

Sean, What kind of primers do you need? If it's Federal 215, I have an extra brick and will be at Bath for the Western NY Schuetzen match Fri and Sat June 20 and 21. $40 will get you 1000.

Thanks that's a great offer

I'm hoping to be at the Bath match but it's unlikely I will be able to transport. I need a formal invite to start the paperwork process to transport in the US. I contacted the East and West NY groups and I'm just waiting for an email reply

The short story is it will take 8 to 12 weeks after I get an invite to attend to get the approval. So I will try to attend as a spectator but I won't be able to bring anything or leave with anything

I have done a lot more testing but sadly no success.
I moved the chrony out as far as I could, about 12yds, before the dip in the land was beyond the tripod height. Still got wild readings so I moved the chrony all the way out to the target. But no success.

I changed the primers from WLRM which are supposed to be the hottest primer according to another post in this section, to Rem 9 1/2. Which according to the same post are mild brisance... No change.

I sifted the powder. Surprised and a little dismayed that there was 3 oz's of dust in a pd of powder. That didn't help either

And I tried every combination with compression from .100 to .300" in 0.050 steps.

I know now for certain where the velocity sweet spot is but I'm getting ES of 50+

So at this point I'm stumped for the most part. The only thing I can think of is the bullet fit is not consistent enough and that's causing a swing in the pressure curve

??? Anybody?

How well does your bullet fit?  If you breech seat the bullet can you see any light coming past it if you hold the muzzle up to a strong light?

Also, is it still grouping well?

yes bullet fit is good. No light visible pointed directly at the sun

And yes it still groups well providing certain conditions.

I'm not sure which is causing the problem because I havent tested each specifically but when the velocity exceeds 1300fps or the compression goes beyond .125" below the case mouth the string goes vertical within the confines of the 21 ring.
