breech seating with Black. Always fill the case

Hello everyone I'm hoping to tap into your expertise.

I'm just about to try breech seating with a 45-70 and I've done multiple searches on here and just cant find a specific answer.

Is it necessary to always fill the case? This rifle has a healthy chamber and a caseful of drop tubed powder is 83+ gr of FFg
But the gun shoots best around 72gr with fixed loads.

If you can use reduced loads does the wad get pushed down to the powder level? plus some compression?

How far is too far?

Hi Seanp,
I shoot a 40/65 BS 70gns wono P small amount of compression with a LDP wad that leaves a tad under 1/2" gap,I just then fill the space with floral foam.works for me.

                       Kind Regards Mal.

Alright
I'm guessing the floral foam controls the acceleration of the wad as it comes up against the base of the bullet

Hi seanmp,
I think it just fills the air space,I'm sure there are people on this forum know a lot more than me on this subject, I got the idea from here!! I found my cases had less blow by , cleaner inside, groups about the same, bonus seems a much cleaner burn.We also tested my mates Hi-Wall, 45/70 Snover barrel, 510grn buff- arms projectile, 70gns Wano P LDP wad slight comp.fixed Whitelighting lube, shot 1" 100yds first time out.He was rather chuffed to say the least!! This Snover barrel sure does shoot.

       Kind regards Mal.in Australia .
