Yes you have the right powder.  However you should be aware that IMR  SR-4759 will not be manufactured after 2014.  So if you want to keep using it, stock up.  Many other powders may also be used in place of 4759.

That is it and it has been discontinued so buy what you can should it work out for your purpose. Saw some on Bullets.com this morning should someone be looking for some.

I have had great satisfaction with AA5744 in this application.  It is a very similar powder in burning rate, and is easy to light even with pistol primers.

You know that, as an aside, it is confusing that SR-4759 is being marketed by IMR since SR was "sporting rifle" and IMR was "improved military rifle" and now you have IMR (the brand) IMR-3031 (the powder) and IMR (the brand) SR-4759 (the powder.) I bought an 8 pound keg of it figuring that by the time I use it up it will come back again for the 3rd time.

When loading BP I use 4F BP as the duplex.

If shooting smokeless use smokeless, if shooting BP use BP

2nd KAF

Thing that keeps me away from Duplex are match rules. If the match is Black only you can't Duplex with Smokless. If it allows smokeless powder might as well use Smokeless powder.

Advantage to duplex is cleaner bore.  Breech seating with two powders ? complication at the shooting bench, two measures two things to think about . My experence better to wipe after each shot and use straight Black.

I see nothing wrong or non-traditional about duplex loading. After all, it's been around since smokeless has been on the market. ASSRA embraces it's use and it's been used competitively for about 130 years.

The only thing I see as wrong with it, is that there aren't more/any matches that have it as a seperate class.

Why the need for a separate class? I think the lack of use today is based on laziness and not because one might be handicapped.

John,
Like all other things, if duplex or straight black where the equal of smokeless, there would be 1/2 the competitors using it.

I shot three matches a year, that included BP & duplex loads, along side smokeless, for 10 years. I either won or placed in the top 3 in those BP matches but never equaled my best smokeless loads. I know of no others that equaled or beat their best smokeless loads either, so, yes, until that pinnacle is reached, I don't believe that anyone will shoot BP or duplex against smokeless, unless there is a seperate class/match from smokeless.

For duplex loads I use R7.  For 32-40, 200 gr bullets I use 3 gr R7.  4759 works well but doesn't meter well through most powder measures.

When shooting BP I use straight BP.

When shooting smokeless I use smokeless.

When shooting duplex I use smokeless and BP.

Any safe load is allowed and that's the way it should be.
