Lyman #2

I got some lead at a very good price the other day and when I tested it, it came out at Lyman #2 which is about 15bhn is this alloy going to be just to hard for BSing bullets, and if so how much pure lead would it have to be added to make it usable? Is 15bhn going to lead at our speeds of under 1500 fps?
thanks    Van

To begin with, the antimony may cause problems. I've had excellent groups when I shot my 45/70 with 2% tin added to WW but, more resently I leaded a barrel with my 32/40 using a Lyman #2 type of 5% tin/WW alloy.

If you cut the #2 with a equal amount of lead (if it is in deed #2) you'll have a 2.5% alloy. Try a small batch of that. If that doesn't work, try cutting it at 1 part #2 and 2 parts lead.

If you shoot GC bullets in anything, it would be best to just use it for that purpose and just use regular 20/1 for BSing.

If you have a metal yard with a alloy tester (forget what they're called), have them test it so you know just what it is and you may be able to alloy it better.

Van I spent a year working with different alloys containing Antimony, straight Lyman #2, Hardball and Lead, Linotype and Lead, Lyman #2, Dan Theodore's favorite formula and other various mixtures. The intent was to minimize nose slump same as Dan's especially spitzers with their long unsupported noses of which are extremely prone to the problem. I never had a Breach Seating and or a Leading issue due to having a proper bullet fit. Some of them shot extremely well but in the long haul not as consistenty as a rich Lead and Tin Alloy mix. I wouldn't hesitate giving it a try but you will probably need to cut it with pure lead and a good place to start would probably be at 50 #2 and 50 pure Lead and to go richer with #2 or leaner with pure Lead from there. It will actually become quite a project and your results more than likely will vary from mine and could turn out to be well worth the effort and I would indeed encourage you do so as it will make for a very rewarding learning experiance.

John,  Frank.. I plan on trying 50/50 #2 and the pure lead that I have and see if I can get the bhn down to around 9 1/2 to 10, my 32 seems to like  around that hardest and never seems to lead up the barrel. Right after this big shoot that I plan on getting my butt kicked.
