Tumbling medium question (ceramic vs. S.S. pins)
Apr 24th, 2014 at 9:26pm
Print Post
Would like to recieve comments (pros and cons) from those who use either stainless steel pins and or ceramic tumbling medium. Also, is one easier over the other to clean and dry for storage when finished tumbling? Any thoughts and comments would be appreciated.

Thank's in advance - John

Have both. Use ceramic for larger cases...good stuff. Use the SS pins for smaller cases. Have to be very careful since the pins are so small and light that they adhere to the sides and top of the tumbler. Jury's out just yet.
I hear there are a smaller ceramic media for smaller cases. That may be worth looking into.
What cases are you looking to clean?

The reason I bought the 2mm media is so I can clean small cases too: 25-20 and 25-21's, plus all my calibers up to 50-70 ... smokeless and black powder

When finished tumbling, decant the solution until it's clear and then drain the burnishing solution - leave the lid off the rotary for the media to dry

Here's a tip also - how to dry your brass in about 2 minutes ... (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

For small cases like 357 and the likes I use the ss pins in a rectangle container hooked up to my lath at low speed, and the 45-70 cases believe it or not I use spent primers, they really work....love clean cases.
I use a hair dryer for drying the cases after a good rinse.

I have tried spherical ceramic and it was poor at cleaning.  Maybe it rolls too much.

I have used the small triangles also, and it works fine, but handling it is like handling wet beach sand.  It sticks to everything; brass or your hands, anything that is wet will hold it in place.

SS pins work good, but I found out that annealed brass is damaged after only 1.5 hours of tumbling.
Note to self, no more annealing small brass cases.
The damage is on the case mouth.  Tiny little dings in the edge of the mouth.

Keep on hav'n fun!

Response to luck88 regarding cases/calibers.
I shoot quite a spread of BP calibers from 32 cal. to 50 cal.

Have been using Dave Maurer's small ceramic media (purchased from Arizona Sharpshooters) with about 1/3 of the stainless pins I purchased from Buffalo Arms in my Thumbler tumbler. Can run ~150 40-65/38-56 cases per load and cleans them in ~2.5hr with an ounce of Lemon Shine cleaner and a small cap of Dawn detergent. Always use at least a 24hr pre-soak in water with a couple of drops of Dawn to insure anything that can be loosened is. I fill the barrel to within 2" of full with water. Thus far, peening or damage to the case mouth is either non-existent or minimal, at most.

I recently bought into the stainless media and love it! Usually tumble an hour an everything comes out looking like new. I use dawn detergent and lemishine with excellent results

In a Thumbler’s Tumbler (slow speed model), I routinely use the large ceramic media for straight cases—45-70 and larger .45’s, 50-70, 45 Auto Rim, .45 Colt, 44 Mag and Special,  .41 Magnum. Cleans very well.  I can run about 100 cases for 4 hours and they come out clean, including the primer pockets.

I tried the smaller ceramic media in the .35 Remington, .30-30 and .32 Special, but it just seemed to jam. Worked best if I cleaned about 50 cases at a time. Finally gave up on it.

A few weeks ago, I purchased some SS pins from Buffalo Arms.

Tried it in the .45-70 and larger .45 cases as well as the .35 Remington, .30-30, and .32 Special.

It did an outstanding job. Primer pockets are clean and it even removed some “baked on” BP fouling.  Ran it for about 5 hours with some heavily soiled BP .45-70 and .45-90 cases.

But the downside is that the pins are easy to lose.

Found that a 5 gallon plastic bag-type paint strainer (was less than US $2.00)  from the local paint supplier works very well to keep the brass and the pins from “migrating” all over.

Fit the bag over the Thumbler, dump the pins and the cases into the bag, then wash out the dirt and soap residue from the brass and pins with the garden hose.

As one poster said, the pins do sticks to the sides of the Thumbler’s rubber liner. When done, I run a magnetic parts pick-up stick to retrieve the dropped pins as my wheelchair has pneumatic tires.
