Ruger No.1 Schuetzen Award Rifle

Print Post
For the collector and or shooter, here is a extremely fine Ruger No. 1 which was gunsmithed by Ron Long, Denver, Colorado.  Chambered in .32-40, fully and tastefully engraved, outstanding figured wood.

You really should see this fine rifle, even if Number One's are not in your "top 5".  The rifle apparently resides in Kansas (wherever that is) and was offered as a prize at the Coors Schuetzenfest, circa 1983.

Minimum opening bid is posted at $4.2 K

Take a look for yourself and make your own judgments.  It is presently on the Gun Broker business site.

I believe it's Grant Gruver's gun. When I get home I'll check the files.

   Mr. Wapiti --
Yes, please do that.  I'm interested in knowing.  Of course, since it is for sale, ownership rights may change hands shortly.

Whoever owns it now, it's still the gun that Grant won at Golden in '83. It's on the cover of the April '84 Rifleman with the accompanying article on the 2nd Coors Schuetzenfest.
(Grant let me shoot it once at the '84 match!) Smiley Smiley Smiley
A gorgeous gun.

Good shooting.

I live about 40 minutes from Salina, I believe Grant lives in Salina. Where is Kansas? When you leave Kansas City heading west, set your clock back about 100 years, that's Kansas. In our defense, we are a red state & we just passed a law allowing open carry anywhere it is not expressly prohibited. We have some of the most nonrestrictive gun laws in the US, think Florida's stand you ground law goes too far, read ours.

Hi Mike :    Oh, you mean THAT Kansas ?  When we drive out heading westerly, that's the place someone else takes over the wheel and I go to sleep.

That's the same Kansas that is mentioned in the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, .  .  . I think is was in 1854 or .  .  . . thereabouts.  Big doings going on !  The Act split the Whig Party in two. .  .  . Northern Whigs reorganized into the Republican Party.  The party of Abraham Lincoln and we now all sit on the right side.

What's this I hear about you wanting to assemble a two-two target rifle ?  Do you mean like in target competition on paper ?  Or do you mean like being able to hit Kansas jack rabbits when they stop for a bite to eat ?    Smiley

Maybe I can get the wife to wait another 20 years for new kitchen cabinets and sidetrack the funds toward this? Wink

I shot in that match in 1983, and yes it was won by Grant Gruver. He was shooting a Winchester that Paul Shuttleworth loaned him, as I recall it had the triggers out of an Aydt rifle. Barry Darr won the bench match that year.

   Hey Bob :

That's kind of anti-climatic .  .  .  . in that we know who the top winners were, so how about telling us how you came out when the score tally was posted.

Also, what rifle were you shooting ?

CMM, That was a long time ago. I had some of the scores and details from the 83 Coors match, but I gave them all to Barry. As I recall, all the matches were scored leaded edge. Championship was 1st, 2nd and 3rd bench, 1st, 2nd and 3rd offhand, 1st, 2nd and 3rd aggregate; that was it. I don't remember my score, but my best target was a 246, I was shooting a Winchester 32-40 with a factory barrel. Interestingly many of the people I see at the ISSA match were there; Tom Duffy, Connie Grims, Tom Rowe, Randy Wright, Russ Hooks, Paul Shuttleworth, lots of others. At that time most of the shooters shot original guns and Max Goodwin supplied us with all the beer we could drink.

And a good time was had by all.

Thanks for sharing the memories from the past.  Knowing what you've told us is part of what schuetzen is all about.  I wish I had been there !
