Does anyone have loading and shooting experience to share RE: the wild cat .338 in a 30-06 necked up case?

C.M.M.,

My 338-06 is a J. P. Sauer & Sohn (1918) military Mauser action with a 22" Apex barrel. I use a 210 gr. Nosler Partition with 61.5 gr. of Win. 760 & CCI 200 primer in Winchester cases (30-06 necked up). OAL of the cartridge is 3.260 due to the short magazine of the action.

This load is safe in my rifle and will shoot under an inch at 100 yards, day in and day out. Not bad for a 7.5 pound rifle (including a 3X9 Leupold scope). It's easy on the shoulder too!

YMMV. Hope this helps.

My .338-06 is an Imp version.  Currently I shoot a 210gr Nosler Partition with 62gr of AA4350, and the old Nosler 180gr Ballistic Tip in front of 60gr of Varget.  Both in reformed RP 35 Whelen cases. 98 Mauser fitted with a 24" Shilen.  The 338-06 data is a common sight in current load manuals, as compared to 35yrs ago when my first one came my along.  Good round, very versatile, with the proper bullets/loads one will give up very little to anything sporting a belt or fatter case when is comes to hunting at practical ranges. Enjoy. Michael.

Thanks to Michael and Jerry_H ---

I do not at the present time have a .338-06, but am thinking ahead that my .25-06 Ruger No.1 could be sleeved to .338 and the chamber reamed up to the .338 diameter.

Going to Canada next year guided for large game and need a little more f.p.s. than my traditional frountier cartridges such as 38-55 and 45-70, both of which are high pressure actions.  One is a Wickliffe '76, the other a CPA M-44 1/2, but barrelled heavy for target rifles, and not something one would want to carry all day "at the ready".

I wonder just how large the 30-06 case can by necked-up to?  Would a .375-06 be a possblity?  What about a 40-06, or is that out of the question?

Comments and suggestions?

I had an extra 30-06 TCR barrel rebored to 338-06 and it shoots great, recoil with 200 or 210 gr. bullets is no problem (barrel was ported before I bought it). Your 25-06 barrel should be rebored not relined.
The problem with calibers over 35 on the 30-06 brass is the small shoulder for head spacing if you want to go to 375 use an improved version.

Anyone have some favorite mid-range cast bullet loads for .338-'06?

I have Ideal #338237, a ~200gr. plain base FN meant for .33 WCF. My shootin' buddy has it in mind for hogs in his .338-'06.

The Imp. 375-06 has energy way out of proportion to its size. It is a fantastic cartridge. I elected to re-chamber to my .375GP with a long throat, letting me get the same capacity as the 30-06length shell which must be seated really deep to utilize "std" actions and magazines. Here is a pic of the comparison of a std .35Whelen/290gr cast and my .375GP with 350gr Barnes Original. Waiting for decent Wx to chronograph several loads.

So, I am on the right track with all this.  I neglected to mention that the Ruger No. 1 is a Varmint model, hence it has a bull barrel and plenty of room to go larger on the interior diameter (now .25 Cal).  The reason I suggested a liner is simply, I can get a relined barrel back a lot sooner that a bore and re-rifle job.

Thanks for your all's help.

It seems unanimous. I have 2 .338-06 made up on Mauser bolt actions (not SSs   Embarrassed ) 210 grain Nosler bullet over WW760 powder gives me groups a few .001s over 1 inch at 100 yds.  Velocity near enough .338 WM to be equally effective at practical hunting ranges. Pleasant to shoot. I carry the .338 anytime I hunt in big bear country.  Good for anything on this continent.

Might want to consider a #1 in .375 H&H.  I can loan you one if you want to play.

   Hi Tim:

I was unaware that Ruger offered their No.1's chambered for the .375 Holland and Holland cartridge.  That being the case, I should be searching for a purchase opportunity for a replacement barrel for my action.  I better place an order for an extractor and get that taken care of in advance of finding a barrel.

My action has been upgraded, to include an adjustable trigger, so to save the time of removing all the up-grades in the action it seems that a barrel replacement would be more effective.

I'll keep in touch with you as the shooting season progresses, that way I'll know where you plan to be on any given weekend and meet up with you there.

I was just thinking that the N-SSA Spring National are in May at Fort Shenandoah and I'll be there looking for Maynard parts.  In the mean time time I'll familiarize myself with the .375 H & H performance specs, so when I see you we can "talk shop."

Do you still have your mortar ?

Yup, still have a dozen or so mortars.  Biggest is 4.5", many in beer can and golf ball calibers.

Headed up to near Quantico for a weekend - will pm you of details.
