reduced load for a borchardt 1878 military

hej guys
did some tests  with  this particular rifle
used vhita N110 22gn on 350 gn HS bullets from haendler & natermann on 45/70 starlight cases , made nice groups at 100 m  due to the very light triggerpull, aiming at centre of a pistol silhouette target .
greetings from flanders

A Borchardt military rifle with a very light trigger pull is an unusual treasure.  Looks like you have a good load for it as well.  Congratulations!

Agreed, Borchardts are not renowned for good trigger pulls. However if you know the angles that the sear and sear notch have to be ground to, you can get the pull down to one pound. Cool It's nice to have another European Borchardt fan, we are quite rare. Cry

the rife looks like new ,all screwheads are untouched ,the lever and  bolt have a marble case hardening colour (jaspage in french)
barrel is   mirror clear ,only the woodwork has some small dings, no signs of wear on receiver and action ,the rear sight works very strong ,it's a trapdoor Benton model 1879  fourth-form
just missing the right bayonet and  the  hook/button sling
geetings from over the pond

Any chance of a few pictures jarmann? That's a very unusual rear sight to be found on a Borchardt and not likely to be a factory fitted model. Finding a Bayonet for a Borchardt is probably impossible, I have yet to see one that is proven to be a genuine Sharps made item. Some I have seen are from other rifles adapted to fit. Sharp's did make a bayonet it's even pictured in the 1878 model catalogues. Every record of sales made by Schyler, Hartley and Graham who bought all the surplus rifles, carbines and spare parts for the 1874 and 1878 never listed an 1878 sold with a bayonet, even when they sold the military rifles by the case it was listed as X number of 1878 Borchardts military rifles (No bayonets). Probably the demand for the Military version of the 1878 to military organisations was so small that they didn't make many at all.

hello harry
sorry ,but I don't now how it works ,I have no knowledge of this techniek ,they asked me several times on other fora to, for other BPCR 's of my collection
the rifle has  serial 88xx ,
saw pictures of 5 different major  Benton rearsights on borchardt 's all made by Barnes, on this forum posted in 2011
saw pictures of michigan NG's  stacked borchardt's with bayonets fitted,
one  told  me about a book of a  mr. reilly autor of "american socket bayonets"and gave  me  some measures :
LOA 54cm, L. socket:7,6 cm, L. blade47cm ,socket bore DIA. 18,20 mm  to 18,60mm muzzle L. or  distance from front of socket to the mortice 35 mm
several hundreds of these rifles were used by differend states  national guards of  north carolina and massachusetts

Hello jarmann,

According to my source the only Barnes sights fitted to military Borchardts were on those supplied to the State of Michigan who purchased 1,300 rifles that was the largest single order other than 3,220 ordered for an undisclosed South American country, by S,H & G in New York. it is not known if these were delivered.

Other than that if all the 1878 rifles sold to various U.S. States and the Chinese Gov't order for 300 the overall total of bayonets would still be relatively small in comparison with the nearly 12,000 military rifles produced. The bayonet for this rifle must be one of the rarest of all US made rifle accessories. I don't recollect seeing those pictures on this Forum but i will carry out a search for them.

Jarmann,

If you have a digital camera, take your picture and plug it into your computer.   There should be some kind of rudimentary photo program on your disc that will allow you to download selected photos off the camera into a file.  Then go to (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) and follow the directions to shrink the pictures.  I use 760 pixels and "Best" quality.  Copy the shrunk picture to your desktop, get back on ASSRA.com, go to "reply," choose the file under "attachments" and post without previewing first.

If a technophobe like me can do it, anyone can do it Grin.

Yep.  Cleaning rod is from a Remington Rolling Block military.  Looks like three tiny holes in the top right of the breechblock(???)
