Model 44-Do the Extract only, or Eject .22LR?
Mar 30th, 2014 at 1:17pm
Print Post
The 44 I picked up from this board Extracts, while my 44 & 1/2 Ejects. Wondering if the 44 was always set up to only Extract, since I think the 44 & 1/2 has a spring and a detent to provide Ejection power, while the 44 does not. No big deal, but am wondering if any of the 44's Eject, and if so, can the Extracting models be switched over to Eject?
Thanks!
Kerry

No...or at least, not without more gunsmithing than the gun's worth.

If your Stevens 44 action has the centrally located extractor, in the Stevens General Catalog No. 53, in the parts list for the Stevens 44 action is shown:

  8 Ejector, 22 Cal.           .60
  9 Ejector Plunger           .15
10 Ejector Plunger Pin      .05
11 Ejector Spring            .05

also:
12 Extractor                  .40

Because the ejector is so much thicker than the regular extractor, would the block have to be milled to accommodate it?

Looks like I have a 7 o'clock Extractor, so not good for the home team. I keep seeing references to the General Catalogs. Where might I find a copy of the one referenced? Since I am leaning on you guys for more info, is the barrel on a 44 the same shank and thread as the barrel on a 44 & 1/2, assuming that they had the same cut for the Extractor/Ejector?
Thanks....Kerry

Nope. Thread pitches are different, shank diameters are different, and shank lengths are different.

Couple quick personal thoughts on the Stevens general Catalogs that might be helpful to you:
For the 44 1/2 rifles, the No. 53 catalog is more informative.

For the 44 rifles, the No. 50 catalog contains in the parts lists both the early side extractor and breechblock, and also the central extractor and breechblock, so this particular catalog is useful for that transitional point in time when Stevens changed the design of the internal parts for the 44 action.
As a bonus, the No. 50 Catalog also contains info on Pope equipment, and Stevens cartridges, which are not contained in the No. 53 Catalog.

Hope this helps.
Others can chime in on their views of any of the other Stevens catalogs.

Abby at Cornell is great. I have most of their Stevens Catalog reprints by now and that's where I get a lot of the answers to questions that I come up with here.
