First Post - Need Help With a Hepburn

trying to help out a good friend who just inherited a Remington Hepburn.  He thinks it's a #3.

Serial #6949

Caliber is 38-40.

Missing the rear peep sight.

A few "noob" questions, please:

Does Remington keep an archived database on these guns?

Were different rear sights used on this rifle?

If he wanted to mount a "correct" sight, what would that be?

And, where would one be found?

Thanks for your help.

Yes, you have a Remington #3. Looks nice. The only records that I am aware of are those in Tom Rowe's new book "Remington's No.3 Hepburn". Rifle #6949 is not listed. Original tang sights are rare and expensive. I am also looking. Steve Baldwin makes a base for his  Soule sight which will fit. They are nice.

Kurt,

That "beech front" is a Lyman No. 8 Windgauge Sporting Sight.

There are three kinds of men: The ones that learn by reading, the few who learn by observation, and the rest who have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.

It appears your friend's Hepburn might have had an extra hole drilled for a shorter spacing tang sight. The Remington uses a 1.90" hole spacing, and the  holes look closer together on his gun. I think the middle hole is an extra. The holes also look larger, like maybe they stripped out and got drilled and tapped larger.

Thank you gentlemen.

I realize you probably tire of first-timers showing up with the same old questions.

Doc
I just wanted to mention that there are at least two different 38-40's out there.  One is the 38-40 Winchester and the other is the 38-40 Remington Hepburn and they are not the same.  Your friend should take a chamber casting prior to shooting the rifle.  The 38-40 WCF is a 40 caliber round and the 38-40  Remington is I believe a 38 caliber round.  I do not know if  Remington chambered the Hepburn in the 38-40  WCF.

Hi  Doc,  first timers are always welcome.  Hopefully you will catch the bug  and ask questions about your first one and then your next one and the one after that.   a 38-40 Rem.hep is a (I think) a reasonably uncommon find.   A nice inheritance !

Welcome. We were all noobies at one time. Nice rifle. The more I shoot my Hepburn the more I like it. You should get one of your own. There are a couple of Hepburn threads in the "Collecting........." with several members rifles shown.

I for one am glad you found us, and asked. Always appreciate good gun questions, and pictures of fine old singles!
