Anyone out there have case length info for the 45-65? I recently purchased a Martini previously owned by Dr. Franklin W. Mann and the chamber is shorter than the standard 45-70.

You probably know this but will have a go anyway

More than one 40/65 out there. It was a Express light bullet cartridge chambering in Winchester Lever Actions.  BPCS silhouette shooters adopted it for match shooting with much heavier bullets than original using a necked down 45/70 case. Not sure the original 40/65 was made on the same case as the 45/70 logically it was but you never know

No doubting your word but never heard Dr Mann did any work with Martini Actions may have just does not ring a bell. Will have a look at 'The Bullets Flight" tonight.

I have been working with a .25 Krag Wildcat, first 25 Krags were developed in part with Dr Mann. I can tell you every 25 Krag is a individual not standard anything. Started with a chamber cast then fit the cases. Lot of tweaks to get them to work properly

Could it be 45-60?

Easy to check chamber length. Slide a standard 45-70 shell in till it stops. Whatever sticks out of the chamber is how much shorter the chamber is than 45-70.

If it is the 45-60 Winchester the case is a nominal 1.89" in length. Just trim back the 45-70 case.

Opps.  Was thinking 40 caliber when I saw "65" if 45 it's probably the 45/60

Thanks for all the input. I should have checked sooner. Let's see if I can figure out how to add a photo. File too large. I'll have to figure it out.

stra8 - there is no 45-65 caliber. I just looked through a table that lists over 1400 calibers - NADA!
Appears that you have no brass for this rifle - so as mentioned, instead of guessing, you need to do a chamber cast.
Do you know how to do a chamber cast?

The gentleman from whom I purchased the rifle offered to do it for me. He had the rifle forty years or so and never fired it. He bought it at an auction in Canton Mass where it was advertised as belonging to Dr. Mann. It came with a copy of the Mann family photograph album which I have on disc. Still trying to figure out the photo thing, maybe it's an age thing. lol

You can easily get the exact length of the chamber.

Expand a 45-70 case mouth until it will not slip in.
Then press it in with your thumb until it stops against the mouth of the chamber. Then check to see how much is preventing the breech from closing.

Trim most of the excess case mouth off.
Expand the case mouth again and force it in.
Check the breech block to see if it will close.
Trim, expand and force the case in. Repeat as required until the breech will close with a drag due to interference at the case mouth.
That is approximately the length of the chamber.
Trim .001 to .002, expand and put the case in.
Repeat until the breech breech closes with only a faint drag. That is the exact lenght of your chamber.
