IMO these recoil springs are useless, they cannot be trusted to return the scope to battery, if you tighten the spring enough to return the scope to battery every time, then you take a good chance of pulling the screws loose in the bases.   Ledball

+! to what ledball said.  I either use my external adjust scopes without springs or with the spring adjusted so loosely it doesn't really do much.  But to answer your question, yes, they are legal.

How much difference does it make if the scope is not 100% returned to battery?

You achieve a different point of impact on the target / points lost.

We should be able to test that with a .22 rimfire at 100 yards.

I've always just made that one more step in my shooting. It's pretty easy to repeat the loading and firing procedure and add pulling the scope back as another step in the procedure. I put all the springs in a drawer and never missed them.

I use the springs on the scope on both of my Winchester 52's and they shoot very very well. But I am building myself a Winchester high wall Schuetzen rifle and I want to be able to use both the aperture sights and the scope that is the reason for the question, Thanks men for the info.

Disagree, you can let it slide back inches without affecting point of impact. The scope is moving in a straight line and the x-hairs will not point to a different location regardless of position in the mounts.

Point of impact does indeed change based on my experiance with the several scopes that I have owned both Lyman and Unertl and points have indeed been lost. Just my personnel experiance and there might also be those that might not notice the ill affect nor have any?

These springs are not for "return to battery", but to catch the scope in recoil. So they are only needed if there is considerable recoil.  If, indeed, they are set tight enough return to battery, they will give the scope and mounts more of a rap than the recoil in the first place.   Form the habit of pulling the scope back after you load each shot.

Totally agree Chris and it also helps to rotate it towards one side of the Pope Rib while doing so as the front mount is generally pretty loosie goosie around the rib. The rear mount tension plunger can also be a sort of problem area as well as it tends to get a little sticky at times. The flat surfaces of both the windage and elevation pads also need to remain flat and void from any grooves caused by wear or when one makes changes they will get real squirrelly.

Point of Impact changes if the scope is not returned to battery. And you can't trust the spring to do it. Like Chris said it's there to catch the scope on recoil.

I was taught to never trust the spring, as it will let you down at the most inopportune time (like your 10th shot). All my scopes are set with the spring just off the mount. My routine is seat the bullet, load the cartridge pull back the scope, set the trigger. After a while you won’t even know your doing it.
