Benchrest SS action

Interested in opinions of having built another 32/40 rifle for bench type shooting at 100-200 yds. Have a CPA in 32/40+25/20 in the VS configuration and really enjoy it.      Have interest in the Rem Hepburn by DZ and by Jim Hamilton. Also the Borchardt  action-but an unsure if they are cast or not. Have read every post here on the forum but would like to get some feedback from shooters whom have tried these rifles from the bench. Caliber would most likely be 32/40. Thank You  bwgdog

I often feel that to much merit is put into a particular action design and not enough in the required effort one needs to put forth to learn what one already has to work with. All though there are some out there with faster lock times the extra money spent will not buy you any extra points, learning to shoot what you already have will. Reliability, good triggers and good service of which you already have will serve you very well and better than most.

No one should just have one America SS action!!!

There are so many to choose from, too. For lock time you can't beat the Borchardt, Hoch or Miller.

Exposed hammer guns are pretty equal, if you don't want to cock the hammer before each shot, choose a American made High Wall.

Beware of the man who only shoots one rifle and knows it well.

For my money a Borchardt that has a good trigger is hard to beat. My criteria for a bench action is an action with solid top and bottom tangs and a through-bolt. I prefer a striker action but a solid action that has a hammer with good lock time is fine. In Traditional actions I prefer Borchardts in modern actions I like the Peregrine as it has the best triggers of the new made actions.

Have to say that I have shot my HP pre64 for 40 years plus-knowing your rifle is important. My son in law also likes my CPA so I can see an opportunity to try something new to me. I do fondly remember my friends Stevens 22 that we shot a lot in the early 60,s-it was the main reason that I started SB with the Win 52 and upward to the Anz 54 then on to HP bolt gun. Am now a grandfather and retired so would like to slow down and enjoy my time at the range. I see actions mentioned but many of them are not currently made. Anyone currently make an SS action with good trigger, solid top and bottom and through bolt with good lock time. Thank You   bwgdog Smiley

FBW's, not a striker action, nice trigger, bullet proof, very reasonable and resembles a Hi Wall in appearance. It does not qualify as Traditional if that is a concern.

My choice is the now-unavailable (except on the secondary market) Peregrine action.  If it will make even me a competitive bench rest shooter, it's got to be good!  Wink

I agree that the action itself can only do so much for you, but it should be compact, with a draw bolt, sensitive trigger (preferably DST) and a stock that is compatible with riding the bags.  It goes without saying that the barrel must be top notch and the bullets as perfect as possible.

In a word, "Trigger."  Both of those are great actions if you can get a good trigger on them.

I have one of the very first USA Hoch's and although I had to tune my trigger, because it was just a assembled pile of parts. I've only cleaned it twice since 1987 and never had to re-adjust it since.

Over the years, mine has been >1000% more reliable than the Miller triggers.

I have not seen any problems with the Miller Triggers out my way, I was just having that conversation with a fellow competitor and he was saying he has never had to touch it. Rifle has been shot a lot and goes back to the late 80's. He brought it over the other day and I might add that I have never felt a better trigger, very impressive to say the least.

I'm afraid that they aren't currently being made but, I do know the guy that owns the rights and has the parts and tooling for them. He won't sell a action but, You can buy the whole works from him.

They come up used (complete rifles) every now and then. Nice ones for $1500 - $1800. Fairly good deals, considering what it cost to build one from scratch if you can't do most of the work.

The Hoch is longer being produced, the gentleman who bought the manufacturing rights is currently not offering any for sale. Be very careful when shopping for a used one, they were originally offered in kit form as well and there were quite a few real Junkers put together.
