Powder Options for 25-20 WCF

I will be joining the Quarter Bore folks in a month when CPA delivers another barrel for my action.  I have been following the very successful California 25-20 shooters who seem to prefer AA4100.  The problem is I can't find the stuff.  What are other 25 cal shooters using for powder and loads.  I'm going to be shooting a 120 gr Darr bullet in a 10 twist barrel, breech seated of course.

I shoot 300MP with good success in my 32-40, has anyone worked up a charge for a 25 cal using this powder.

Then there is the inevitable messing around with black powder:)

300MP will work if you have it and it's pressure friendly, the AA4100 is probably the better choice when you can get yours on some.

H108 or WC820 is another good powder if you have it. Start at 6.0 gr.

Both are very good powders but don't go shopping for any as both have not been available for several years now.

To go off on a slightly different tack, will this same load work with 25-20 SS as well?

Froggie you still have some of that $50.00 8lb 108 laying around from back in the day, if so give it try it tends to work good for everything. A good friend has been using it for years in his 25-21 with real good success.

I have been using AA #7 and HS-6 in my 25-20 Repeater with a Borton/Darr 115 gr or the RCBS 257-120-SP with the gas check milled off which weighs  about 114 grains.

About 6 grains of either powder.

I think Winchester 540 is the same as HS-6

Well everyone seems to think that IMR 4227 is old and outdated but I have been loading 10.0 gr. under a 85 gr cast bullet for several years now and have had great success with it. 1894 Marlin lever.
And you can still find IMR 4227.

Just my 2˘

IMR 4227 is great in a 25-20 WCF lever gun with a 86 gr. bullet, but entirely different when breech seating a 120 gr. bullet and trying to obtain 1650 fps. We tested IMR 4227 and ran out of velocity before the pressure took over.

YMMV,
