What is the purpose of these two screws?

Over many years I have been assembling information about Sharps Borchardt Rifles and customised versions of the same. It's an interesting pastime and I have learned a lot. However, I am stuck to the point of frustration by two small machine screws that appear only on the left hand side of Schuetzen Rifles made by A.O.Zischang using original Sharps Borchardt actions. See picture. These two screws are situated towards the rear of the action above the large diameter 'Plug Screw'.

At first I thought they may have connection with a sight mounting, but all the Scopes I have seen on Zischang Rifles have had the scope blocks mounted on the barrel, and it would appear that they are too far forward for some form of peep sight to be mounted on a bracket attached to the side of the receiver, especially when the rifle is fitted with an excellent original Borchardt micrometre sight. So the mystery remains, what was their purpose? Does anyone have any idea(s)?

What did an examination from the inside of the action show?

All of my single shots shoot one tiny ragged hole with cast bullets ... it's just the following shots that tend to open up my groups Wink ...

Hello Lefty,
I haven't seen the rifle personally, I live in England and the rifle is in the USA. There are numerous examples of Zischang's rifles having these screws but I've never seen anything attached to them in photographs. If the foremost of them was of any depth at all it would contact the Breechblock, the rearmost would screw into vacant space once occupied by the concealed safety operating cam. There seems no reason for them to be there, but they must have had a purpose of some sort.

Harry, the two holes are were for holding a saddle ring.  On the military carbine model.

Hello Bob,
I've only ever seen them on Zischang modified rifles, never on any other gunsmiths work.

Ye Gods and little fishes Joe, it's so obvious when someone else spots it. That's been bugging me for months. Thanks. It's no wonder the Carbines are scarce, Zischang must have cornered the market in unused  carbine actions the number of these I have come across that were modified by him.

Thanks to all,

Harry

Ye Gads and Big Fishes, the two holes in question can not be both threaded for the reason that a "U" shaped staple with both male posts threaded as is shown could not conceivable be screwed into the receiver exterior side wall.

Of course, a threaded single post "eye" bolt with a circular ring manufactured into the eye is possible, as is used in the Winchester saddle ring carbines, but what is shown here is a two post "U" staple.

Couldn't they have been threaded after the saddle ring bracket was removed??

I'm sure the holes were tapped aftr removing the staple as a means of filling the holes.

Yes Terry, using a bottom tap when the breech block is in place and then the two "Blind Screws" added in order to fill the vacant unused holes.
