38 55 high wall barrel questions (Read 2479 times)

	I lucked into a no 4 weight flat spring 38 55 highwall barrel at a show this weekend. I have two questions I hope someone can address. First, do I have to modify the action to install this barrel? The corners on the barrel rub against the inside of the flange on the front of the action - the one the rear of the forend goes into. If yes, do I work on the barrel or the receiver? Second, I am curious about the markings on the bottom of the barrel. Near the shoulder of the barrel there is a "3" stamped. There is a "4" stamped where the front of the forend would be and the measurements are those of a 4 weight barrel. What does the 3 mean? In the space between the two female dovetails there is a "6" (or "9"?) stamped closer to the hammer spring dovetail and an "11" near the dovetail for the forearm screw base. What do they mean?

	You need to reduce the thickness of the flange. I had to do this once when installing a heavy barrel. It's pretty easy if you can hold the action in an upright position. I used diamond files. Slow because your stroke is not very long. Careful that you don't take anything off the face of the receiver. I did see a barrel that had the corners of the flats reduced. Not pretty. The #3 near the front of the receiver indicates that the barrel is for a number 3 highwall receiver. Some think it is a mismark but that's not the case. Bob

	Frank: In front of the threads the barrel is 1.12 across the flats and 1.3 across the points. At the muzzle it is 1.05 across the flats and 1.22 across the points.

This isn't a cheap fix but it will be a excellent way to fix your problem: Buy a 1 5/16, piloted counter bore, lathe turn a pilot to fit the enter diameter of the barrel thread and of course the other end to fit the counterbore. You can then turn it by hand and cut the flange all the way down to the action face. Frank

	Schoyen and others just turned the back of the barrel down a bit to clear the action. Modifying the action is is how Winchester did it but if some one goes back to a smaller barrel it is visible. Cheers, Laurie
