MVA series B scope/Leatherwood Malcom

Have a 1885 Low Wall in 38-40WCF use just as a plinker around 100 yards . Tried Meritt optical peeps ect.. Old eyes are done with open sights need a scope .
I'am looking at the MVA series B with the no. 1 mount, not the no. 2 mount with the micro clicks  which is far better I know . Other than the shape of the external  rear ring what is really different between the adjusting knobs on the MVA and Malcom Leatherwood . They look almost the same to me. I understand the Leatherwood is hermetically sealed and filled with nitrogen gas and the MVA uses the rubber O ring with lube on it and is not hermetically sealed ? Reports that the Leatherwood's optics are sharper and clearer ? Malcom Leatherwood comes with nice brass end caps , MVA will sell you for an additional 40.00$ leather lens covers . MVA is double the price , what are you getting that is so much better with the MVA other than it is made in America ?

I've owned a Leatherwood Malcolm and currently own a an MVA B5 and a 23" MVA Malcolm.

Here is my $0.02, I hope it's of use to you.

The mounts on my leatherwood malcolm were absolute junk. Not repeatable and they would "adjust themselves" after not too many shots.     The optics were good but had no ability to adjust for parallax.   The scope came off after a few frustrating weeks and I traded it away.

The mounts on both of my MVA scopes work very well.  The optics are great and you can adjust for parallax.  On a bright day I can spot my .45 cal bullet holes at 200m.   That's pretty good a 3/4" 5x or 6x scope and my not so great eyes.

Chris.

Brudford,

  You will get exactly what you pay for. If you want an expensive paper weight that looks like a scope you will be quite happy with the Leatherwood scope. If you want a precision instrument that has quality optics and will last you a lifetime go with the MVA. I have used and installed both on numerous rifles, they look similar but that is where the similarity ends. For plinking on a budget the Leatherwood may work just fine for you, however if you ever want to get serious about getting the best out of your rifle and loads you will probably wish you had spent the extra. Only my opinion, the decision and the money you spend is yours.

Buy the MVA! I started with a leatherwood, optics are ok but mounts are poor at best.Spent a lot of time and ammo trying to get it to repeat. It would have cost less to just to get the MVA and they are great to deal with.Sold the leatherwood at quite a loss and have 2 MVA scopes a 23" and a Full length.A friend has a B5 and loves it. Just my nickel Thanks,Bob.

I agree with the other guys. Get the MVA and be done with it. You do get what you pay for. Dale.

I have both the LW 32" Malcolm scope and the MVA B-5.  Unhappy with the LW standard rear mount (w/elevation screw), I bought what LW calls their precision mount; I returned it, not even a decent door stop.  Keeping the LW rear mount I tried using a RHO front mount (excellent).  But the LW rear mount was useless, unrepeatible settings, non-std 60TPI threads. Angry   The LW mounts don't even make good scrap metal.  I like the LW scope but the mounts...  I'm looking for a quality rear mount now.

If you don't want to change settings and will lock the LW down, then go for it.  You can buy the scope separate.

I pulled the LW and ordered the MVA B-5 with the micrometer type adjustment and with three bases.  My gunsmith installed the bases on my 22LR M1885 LowWall and a .22Hornet M1885 HW.  I kept the third for future use.  Alignment was exactly the same on both bases, probably because the gunsmith did excellent work.  Once set, the elevation of the .22LR at 50 yds was exactly 3MOA up from the 22Hornet at 50yds.  I swapped the scope around, played around various ranges (50, 75, 100 yds) with both calibers; the MVA returned exactly back to the previous settings.

The rest of my range day was ruined because I kept smiling about the MVA and that threw my aim off. Roll Eyes

MVA is a fine little scope, I can pick from two Unertl's one Lyman STS, Modern Rifles Leupolds or Steel Tube Weaver T's Like the MVA best of all. Small reliable good optics,

And it looks right on my CPA's

This topic has already been beaten like a rented mule. Here's the Readers Digest version;  MVA = quality and precision
Leatherwood = JUNK
