I know this thread is old, but I wanted to re-open it since I'm off to a fresh start.  Since last year I've bought two more #2 Remington rolling blocks; one in 32-20, the other in 32 XL rimfire.  Both have near excellent bores. I've shot the 32-20 a good bit and its fine rifle.  But now I'm focusing on the new 32XL rimfire.  My first #2 in 32XL was pretty badly worn, so it has been retired.  This new one is in much better condition, so I'm starting to work with it in the hopes of getting good performance.

I have shot it a few times so far and it shows good potential.  I've also swapped the centerfire breech block into it from the 32-20 and shot it as 32 Ballard XL.  But my goal is to get it shooting in the original rimffire configuration. So that's where I'm heading.

To make priming easier, I'm now working with little acorn blanks. These sound pretty similar to just a primer going off, so they seem to work well.  But even with mild smokeless loads, I'm backing down the charge a little to be on the safe side.

I'm also experimenting with a heavier bullet than before.  Original loadings of the 32XL ran from 105 - 115gr.   So as an experiment, I've taken 115gr Lyman 311008 bullets (typically used in the 32-20) and turned a .299" heel on them.  They now have the same bearing surface length as the Accurate 31-090S bullet - .200".  So I'm using cases that I had shortened slightly for that bullet.  Here are the three bullets I'm using; Lyman 299153, Accurate 31-090S and a modified Lyman 311008.

Here are loaded rounds with the 299153 bullet on the left and modified 311008 on the right.

There are thousands of these old 32 rimfire rifles tucked away in closets, I bet some of you have them too.  I'd like to encourage you to get them out and bring them back to life.  Please share your experience here and tell us what you have.

Since mine are Ballards, I simply flipped the firing pins over and loaded them with CF cases! Wink

Too bad remington didn't make a dual firing pin set up. It only takes a couple minutes to swap to the centerfire block. But my goal here is to use. It as a rimfire. What bullet and load are you using? Do tell! Thanks.

Marlinguy,
Where do you get cases for your .32 Ballard centerfire?

Since I've owned Marlin repeaters and Ballards both in .32 Long for decades, I've got about 500 rounds of cases and factory new ammo. I bought every box I saw in both .32 Long, and .32 Short for many years. I used to find original loaded ammo for $5 a box, and up to $12 a box when it began to be tough to find.
I stumbled across some NIB Remington unprimed brass a few years back, and bought 6 boxes of them. Never used yet, as I haven't worn out my supply yet!
I reload mine with bullets I cast from an old Ideal tong tool, which is marked .32 Ballard Long, and drops a 90 grain bullet. I also have an old NEI mold that drops a 115 grain bullet that I use. I use 3.5 grains of Unique with the 90 gr. and 4.0 grains of Unique with the 115 gr. Makes a nice accurate plinker load.
Years ago I tried some adapter cases I purchased from Dixie Gun Works that used the crimped .22 blanks, but quickly tired of trying to drive the blanks out after they expanded. Tossed them in a drawer somewhere, and never used them again. Both the Marlin repeaters (1891/1892) and the Ballards can shoot both RF and CF, so simply stick with CF now.

Marlinguy - great info, thanks. You are indeed fortunate to have that stash. For us who are playing catch-up, the Jamison 25-20 Single Shot basic brass is about perfect. Pretty much just trim to length and load. But it is hard to find now too.

Those fired 22 blanks can be a pain to get out. That's another reason why I like the acorn blanks, they come out much easier since they are very short. Yesterday I loaded four different 32XL loads, one of which is 3.5 gr of unique over an Ideal 299153 bullet. I hope it shoots as well as your load.

You might consider looking at the .327 Federal brass. I've talked with guys who are using it for both the .32 Long and the .32 XL. They seem to like that donor case, and they're easy to find.

I started. With 327 Fed Mag brass, made about 40 cases. It's a lot of work, but they work just fine,
