Browning stamp on Highwall (Read 3327 times)

	I recently picked up an 1885 special sporting rifle in 95% condition with the Browning Bros.Ogden u.t. stamp on it. Does anybody know why it is marked with the Win mark and Browning? Also how much does it add to the value of the gun. Thanks, Tony

	The Browning stamp "probably" indicates that your High Wall was sold through their establishment. Added value is in the eye of the beholder ; or consult Flayderman's guide. He usually has some arbitrary % for special features or provenance.

	I have seen the same markings on other models of Winchester rifles.

	Browning Bros. stamped all the rifles sold through their shop. Adds about 20% to the overall value of a rifle to have that stamp. I've sold several with it. dave

	Of course if it had only the Browning Bros. stampings and no Winchester markings at all, you could name your own price and retire to a country mansion complete with Hot and Cold running chambermaids. Harry

	Winchester paid J.M.Browning in cash and guns for his design/patent work, and as previously stated, those guns were sold thru the Browning Bro. Utah Store. Browning used a couple of different stamps; what most collectors focus on with the Browning Bro stamp is that guns made prior to 1896 have the proper U.T. (Utah Territory) in the stamp address.

	Also another item that is overlooked on some of the fake ones is that there was a very particular style of U in the U.T. Looks strange with the rest of the letters. dave

	I've seen a Browning Bros highwall @ a gunsmith's shop,it was chambered in 40-70 SS the only markings were Browning Bro's and 40-70 SS and the serial no,one or a low two digit #. The Gunsmith told me that. Browning made and sold some of there rifles before Winchester finally agreed to buy the patent rights and tooling from browning. The Gunsmith has been dead for over 20 years now. He knew or corresponded with most of the old timers and I would take his word as gospel. Later Longdistance1

	The chief difference between a Browning Brothers high and a Winchester high wall is the block on the Browning Brothers goes straight up and down, the Winchester rocks. As has been stated before after the sale to Winchester Browning sold Winchester high walls and marked them in the same way many dealers marked the rifles they sold. Browning sold Winchester high walls have been faked in the past. It really only takes making up a stamp and putting it in the correct place. Not as common as genuine Custer battlefield “Indian” lever guns, but they are out there. Before I shelled out big money I want to see documentation that the rifle was shipped to Browning. 40 Rod

	You're right on the provenance, 40 Rod. Every one that I have had has lettered to Browning. Just takes the cost of the letter to do the provenance. Usually comes back with information on the gun, and a notation that it was one of a lot of 19 or 11, or some # that was sent to Browning Bros. That's the type of information that was included in the warehouse book. dave
