Let's talk "All Aspects of SS" and a Fine Gent

Folks,
I am new to this forum. First thing caught my eye was a For Sale ad by DWT1885 for what is now MY Stevens 44&1/2 .22LR Cool
I didn't and still do not know anything about them. But...
If I violate any rules, mea culpa, but I just wanted to tell you all what you already know. Dale is a fine gentleman  who stands by his word, and the little rifle I bought was far in excess of what I thought I paid for. While I still do not know how to tell if it is a 44 & 1/2, I know it aint a Favorite, since I own one of those. I got it today, took it apart and cleaned it so that I would know how it works. Wish I had a book, but I got the patent drawing and it helped some. I installed my little Unertl on it after attempting to see through that neat Lyman receiver peep and finding that yes, my eyes are 50+ years old. Looking forward to shooting the old gal this weekend. It appears I have the SS Fever as bad as I had my 1911 and M-1 Garand Fever, so I'll be broke for awhile. Dale packs a mean box, which is good, since USPS sent the old gal to Houston and back to Pittsburgh by mistake, on a sight-seeing tour. Finally came back to Texas, where from the look of this fine barrel, she will have fun at Metallic Silhouette all summer long. Thanks Dale!
Kerry

That's easy: does the block move up & down in a mortise milled into the receiver?  That makes it a 44-1/2.  Were it a 44, the block would roll or swing backwards.

Sell me one of your surplus Garands, & you can buy another Stevens to add to your growing collection.

That looks like you got a good deal Amanda. Reference detailed drawings, you can't do much better at present than Frank DeHaas's book, Single shot Rifles and Actions. It's out of print and not cheap. Whatever you do, do not rely on any Patent Drawings, they are often vastly different from the production item.

E.G. the original Sharps Patent for the Borchardt Rifle was dated 1876. It was put into production in 1877 and a second patent was issued in 1878. Hence it being called the model 1878. The original patent showed the rifle with a slant breechblock and a lot of items that were changed or missing from the production model. If I remember correctly I once counted the differences and there were over twenty of them. So beware Patent Drawings, they are not at all reliable.  Roll Eyes

Harry.

Nice rifle Kerry, I had my eye on that, and if I hadn't just bought a ballard 22rf would have been all over it.

Like Harry said, DeHaas is your friend.

Other than that the best way for me to tell it is a 44 1/2 is to look at the size of the cutaway in the frame that exposes the breech block, it's much smaller on a 44 1/2, much like a high wall vs low wall. Also the breech block on a 44 1/2 looks shorter.

Thank you for the kind words Kerry. I'm on the hunt now for a 38-55 Hepburn. Being 65, I hope it doesn't take to long. Dale.

Very nice rifle; and from what i can see of the action, it sure looks like a 44-1/2.
The side walls don't seem to have the deep cutaway like a 44, and the block has the shorter, less sloped shape to it.
BUT I MIGHT BE WRONG.
A close up of the frame will reveal all.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Sure looks like a 44.5 to me, and a dandy! Very nice gun to add to any SS collection. Junk will always be junk, but nice guns just get better with time!

I would expect it will shoot really well with the scope. Mine is good with the receiver sight. At 69 the peep still works well for me but the scopes are better.

Amanda,
Comparing your original side view photo to a Stevens '44' stripped receiver I have indicates it is NOT a '44' action.
The bottom of the photographed receiver has a long 'lump' between the lever pivot pin and the trigger 'guard' curve which is not present on a '44' receiver.

There is no visible Breech Block pivot pin in the photos.
Even with the receiver side mounted peep sight there should be some indication of a pivot pin if that had been a '44' receiver.

Even your later photo post of the side of the action does not reveal any evidence of a Breech Block pivot pin in the receiver side.

Best Regards,
Chev. William

I know from taking it apart that it is a Falling Block action, so I assume that means a 44 & 1/2. It has been interesting, finally getting some old Frank de Haas books delivered for this and the Remington #2 Rolling Block I picked up. Looks like I chose well, even though I had no idea what I was buying when I agreed to spend the money. My wife accuses me of gravitating toward high-end (she means high-priced) cars and guns.  Cheesy

It is a Model 404 Semi-Military model. 44 1/2 action. There is an action screw that is partially obscured by the receiver sight. It is in the 1911 and1914 catalog's. Yes you chose well.

Any way to tell when old serial number 12900 was made? Or maybe when Remington No.2 Rolling Block number 14417 was made? I don't know for sure, but seems like most dates of mfg. for these two are either educated guesses, or maybe just plain old guesses. I assume the factory records got torched. Seems like a lot of old ammo and firearms factories burned down in the early 1900's.
