H&R in 222 rimmed balistic problems

Hi
I have a Harrington and Richardson topper model 158 which was originally chambered for 22 hornet. during the early eighties I had it re chambered for 222 rimmed to get a bit more go out of it. I also had the barrel shortened to 420 mm over all so I could take it apart and fit it inside my pack while hiking in to hunt fallow deer and goats and pigs.
I have never been able to stabilize the bullet . I had the best results when I loaded them back but still not acceptable. I abandoned the project when I clean missed a trophy buck which only presented a head shot.
A now deceased friend who new about these things suggested that I use pistol primers and powder but I don't know the ins and outs of that. I have the opportunity to hunt pigs in a local state forest which would require riding in on my bike then walking some distance. I would like to get this thing shooting. Anyone have any ideas?

Bruce,

What bullet?

The barrel may have a 16" twist, in which case you should try the lighter 40-45 grain bullets of conventional construction (not the ones with plastic tips).

Thanks Clarence
I believe the barrel has a 1 in 9 inch twist which should help! I was using 50gn bullets with standard loads at first. I was getting 8 in groups!! at 50mtrs. I have examined the barrel and can see no problems. The chambering was done by a well known gunsmith. The barrel has shot about 50 rnds. I don't know if I should speed it up or slow it down, someone said the shape of the bullet can help but I don't know if it should be longer or shorter. The burn rate of the powder can make a difference but again I don't know  . All confusing to me especially as I live in the bush.

What do you mean by, it won't stabilize? Do you mean that the bullets are keyholing or tipping or what? I assume your shooting jacketed bullets? A 9 twist should stabilize at least the Sierra 69 gr and the military 62 gr bullets. The first thing I would check is the crown on the barrel. Use a Q-tip in the muzzle and pull it out. None of the fibers should catch on the crown.

How did it shoot as a Hornet?

Std twist for Hornet is 1-16", 222 1-14".  1-16 should stabilize bullets up to 55grs. If you haven't already, I would try Hornet weight bullets (40-45gr) loaded to Hornet velocities.

FWIW, a M158 has a 1 in 16" twist, you can check your gun to confirm this.  Use 40-45gr bullets and the problem is solved.  GW

Thanks everyone
The problems were probably more accuracy than ballistic as the bullet wasn't tipping or key holing but spraying around the target. I thought a 1 in 9 twist was a bit unusual but that what I read on a blog? I will look at the barrel mussel and I will try 45 GN. Bullets. it might take a while for me to get around to this but I will let you know how I go.
Thanks again

Bruce,

Use a tight patch, mark the rod, and you will determine the actual twist.  If it is 16", the light bullets will likely solve your problem.  That rifle should be new enough to have a 0.224" groove diameter.  If the twist is 9", try some heavier bullets, but the level of accuracy you're getting may indicate a bad barrel.
