Stevens Favorite

Picked-up a Stevens Favorite last weekend for a great price. I figured to do some plinking and thought it would not be a problem. Unfortunately my arthritic thumb has trouble working the hammer. Not sure if a hammer spur would help or not.Anyone else have this problem/suggestions to help?

This is not usually a problem. There is the possibility that someone has replaced the mainspring with one that is too stiff. It is a flat spring that you could possibly grind a little at a time off one end to lighten it up. I would have someone else see if it seems to be too stiff to them.

The later Stevens Favorite used a coil spring for the hammer, it can be adjusted to a lesser tension than the flat spring.  Ledball

The Coil Springs were used in the 1915 series Favorite action.
The Flat springs were used in the 1894 and 1886 series Favorite actions.
Either could be 'tuned' by a good gunsmith to give a reasonable cocking effort.
Since this is a Favorite, you may need to remove the Butt stock to see which spring type you have.
"Wisner's" reproduction parts web site includes descriptions of the various favorite actions and their parts differences.
"Jack First" Catalog has good drawings of some of the Stevens Favorite actions and lists of parts to go with them.
Best Regards,
