How common is 1885 in 40-90 SS?

I guess that's the whole question. I have a 1887 build date with 30" #4 barrel and am curious as to how often these show up? I am lucky enough that is is in good shape as a shooter but not good enough to be a closet queen. So it gets an occasional work out.

Thank you,
Charles

I have a round High Wall barrel in .40-90 SS.  There was a writeup in the American Rifleman in the 1930's or early 1940's by a guy who had found one in a pawn shop,  He'd called Elmer Keith and asked him how to load for it.  Keith congratulated him on his purchase and said that the 40-90 was the only cartridge that, to his certain knowledge, would shoot lengthways through an elk every time.

So I guess they're around, but I haven't run into any others.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Unfortunately this is one area that is lacking in Cambell's wonderful two volume set. Calibers were almost devoid in #I, and #II book listed all the calibers, but no mention of how many, or how rare certain calibers were. There were two .40-90 calibers. One the .40-90 Sharps Straight, and the other the .40-90 Ballard caliber.
I'd guess both are very rare, but the .40-90 Ballard most likely rarest of the two. Bert Hartman could probably give you a good idea, as he's well versed in the 1885, but haven't seen him post here lately. Might try to PM or email him. I don't remember his user name, but I have his email if you'd like me to PM you.

I also wonder how period correct the Lyman rear, globe front, and full buckhorn rear barrel sight might be?

They are not common by any means but there are probably more out there than we think.  I have original High Walls in 40-50 SS, 40-90 SS and a 40-70 Ballard.

the 40-90 SS would have been the express caliber or the .40 cal M1885. Rifles in express calibers are rare but not exceedingly rare.  Don

WRA also offered their own 40-110 Winchester Express cartridge in the hiwall. Bottlenecked with a larger base than the 40-90 SS cartridge, but same case lengths.

There are three kinds of men: The ones that learn by reading, the few who learn by observation, and the rest who have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.

The Lyman 103 sight came along after the turn of the twentieth century, showing up in the catalogs around 1916, according to the Lyman centennial handbook.

Your front sight looks more like a Winchester globe sight.  The Lymans had the screw in holders for the replaceable apertures, rather than the slider arrangement.

The buckhorn barrel sight could be factory or aftermarket.

If somebody was excited enough to spend extra money on a windage adjustable rear sight and a globe front sight, the gun must have been a pretty accurate one.  How does it shoot?

Have just been punting around with it so accuracy will be the focus for when the snow goes. As for Express I measured the twist rate and it is 1:20 so I am wondering what the longest bullet would be appropriate? I was using a 410gr but that may be to long.

Thanks,
Charles

There was a survey of the records done in the early 90's.Some are kind of hard to figure what they mean.
40/90SS     13
40/90Ballard  104
40/90          272  doesn't say straight bottle neck or anything
49/90S.N.    1
40/90St.      640
Somebody knew what it all meant when they wrote it down but hard to understand now. All 22's was over 39,000.
Don't know if I helped much.
