40-50 Sharps Straight

CPA finished installing the barrel on my Mod52 and I'm hoping to get it out to the range next weekend. I have three powders I feel should work well in the 40-50ss.

300-mp
4759
4227

I'll be using a Ron Long 400gr tapered bullet breach seated.

I was thinking a good starting charge would be 15grs for each of these powders. I'm looking for some feedback from others who have experience with the 40-50SS.

Thanks in advance,

Bob

Thanks ledball. I still have a good supply of 16yr old #9. I'll add it to my list of powders to try.

Andy,

That's close to what I'll be shooting. I'll give it a try. Are you using floral foam wads with yours?

Thanks,
Bob

No I use white foam packing material.  What some call sill insulation, I believe.  It is not particularly easy to use but has served me well.  Down on the powder.

I am using 300MP in my 40-70 with encouraging results. I don’t have a weight just the number of clicks on my measure. I’ll weigh it today and give you a place to start.

John,

300mp is defiantly one of the powders I'll be trying. It meters great in my Harrell's Schuetzen measure. I have a good supply of 4759 I want to use up since it will be discontinued.

What bullet are you using? If you can let me know what stetting your using on your measure.

I've been using floral foam and pipe insulation wads in my 32-20 with good results so I'll try them in the 40-50.

Thanks,
Bob

My initial results with the 40-50SS look promising. All groups are 10 shots at 100yds. I started off with 4759 and a load that Andy Z recommended. Later I'll work my way up from 16gr at .01gr intervals to look for a sweet spot. MP300 is another powder I have a good supply of and it measures great in my Harrell's.

Here's the bullet I'm using from my Accurate mould. It's a 385gr tapered with a .409dia base band.

Did you ever use the 400 gr Ron Long bullet? I see all the targets are listed as 385 gr.

As something to try, that might improve the groups a little (I don't think you can make great improvements, with that accuracy), try Remington 2 1/2 pistol primers. I've found them to give noticeable improvements with 4759, Wolf pistol and Fed 150 next.

Hi Frank,

I did try the Ron Long bullet when I fire formed my cases with 4227. Accuracy was ok. The base band on that bullet is .411 dia and weighed 395gr cast 1-20. I noticed the fowling star at the muzzle was not even. Out of curiosity I pushed out a few bullets after breach seating. The bases had a slight fin on one side. I was concerned the base band was too large for the .408 bore dia. This was when I used a plugged case. I'll try them again with the breach seater I got from Quarter_Bore in the future.

The 385gr bullet I'm shooting is a Ron Long design made for me by Accurate with the base band reduced to .409. I do have Fed 150 primers and will give them a try.

Regards,

Bob
