Need info! Ballard Schuetzen rifle (Read 4780 times)

	I have a Ballard Schuetzen rifle that I don't know much about. It has an 30 inch octogon barrel. It has double-set triggers. The man I got it from said it is a 45-70 but I'm really not sure. Stamped on the receiver is "JM Marlin. New Haven, CT, USA Ballard patent Nov 5, 1861". I don't find any other markings on the rifle. It is missing the hand guard. If you need more info or pictures, please let me know! Thank you for any information, John update 3/5/14: I found serial number 14138 on the underside of the barrel and receiver.

	You have a very nice rifle. Because of the cailber, I would call it a Pacific with a Schuetzen butt stock but, I don't see the cross pin mount for the fore arm. Others will give a better opinion. Frank

	LOVE the rear sight! Is that bronze or brass? Post (smaller?) picture of the barrel forward of the action? You could also check the buttplate and action parts for serial no's, plus to see if they match.

	All of my single shots shoot one tiny ragged hole with cast bullets ... it's just the following shots that tend to open up my groups ...

	As Frank already told you, that's a Ballard Pacific with a Schuetzen re-stocking job. I can see the hole for the foream pin about 8 inches in front of the receiver, and the two pins on the front face of the receiver give it away, too. Nice rifle, if you can find original wood to restore it, the value would be much higher as a pacific than with the stock on it, and that stock would be valuable to someone wanting to put together a Schuetzen. dave

	Pacific? Yes, but I don't see any dovetail cuts under the barrel for the two thimbles for the wiping rod? Might still be a Pacific action that someone swapped barrels on, and then drilled to use a cross pin forearm mount. But hard to say for sure, unless we could see the bottom of the barrel to see if there's an old hole for a std. forearm, and maybe fillers in the dovetail locations.

	Montana was only in cal 45 2 7/8 S. No others were offered and the barrel is 1/8" larger than the frame all around. Its rather on the heavy side.... Don

	Pacific and Montana both had the two pins on the front side of the receiver to hold the wood. As far as I know, no other Ballard (except the 4 1/4) had the two pins on the front face of the receiver.

	As for the Brass sight I recall seeing an original Pacific in the Detroit area 30 years ago that had an original brass rear sight. Anyone else see one?
