I'm curious of your opinions on GB auction 395954365.

Custom stock. Missing the original receiver sight. Forearm has been checkered. Scope looks like it has an add on to boost magnification. Strictly a shooter. I have been watching it but too modified for me. If bore and action are right it sould be a very accurate gun.

Custom stock....

I guess!  A sharp hatchet could correct that cancerous growth on the forearm, but what's to be done with the hind end?  When I see such a price attached to such a gun, I just need to sit down & breath deeply.

That hot tank reblue job that turned the action and lever purple makes me want to puke.  I think that bothers me more than the wood.

I forgot to mention the re blue. I said the stock was custom, never said it was pretty.

Looks like a custom position rifle to me.  My WH is uglier still. Have shot so many 250's with it, stopped counting.

Receiver is also d&t'd for that Redfield Int'l/Olympic rear sight mounting plate. Looks about the same as my brother's #2 Ballard/Freeland for wood. Folks did some ugly work in late 40's - 50's.

Thanks fellows for the opinions! I'd sure like to have a Walnut Hill but not what's left of that one!

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

If it shot well, it probably made the previous owner pretty happy. If it didn't then it's hard to overlook all the ugly. I don't think it's way overpriced, but I doubt it will sell with the narrow price range from starting bid to BIN price. Seller needs to drop it a few hundred to get the bidding started, and then a couple guys might battle a bit for it.

I think the stock could be salvaged & a metal refinish would help or at least strip the receiver. Combined with the scope I'd say it could make a pretty good deal.     ...MIKE...

Fun when you set something like that on the bench, some smart ass asks, what do you think you're gonna do with that?

This rifle is obviously an old position/target rifle. Let's do some math; BIN price is $1150, scope is worth $600, after all the whining about this rifle, it's not worth $550?????  In other words, if I had a budget of $550, I could find and an action, barrel, and wood and put similar rifle together for less $550 ?

I am not saying it is not worth that to someone, just not to me. Sell the scope and find the correct pieces to make it right again would cost more than I could find a correct gun for. As I said earlier, it would probably be a good shooter for that price. All of mine are deadly accurate but they are pretty much original with the exception of a shortened stock on one and a rubber pad on another. Have two more that are totally right including the .22 Hornet that is pretty much pristine and correct including the Lyman 438 Field scope.

You're right--the ugliness of the gun made me forget about the scope; though getting $600 for it may be a bit optimistic.  Possibly the stock could be sold to a collector of folk-art.

I give my solemn word not to bid against anyone who wants it.
